He destroyed the last shards of GOP credibility with his phenomenally stupid, "We investigated Hillary and she's down in the polls!"
The Speaker of the House is third in line for the presidency. It has to be someone at least as non-stupid as Boehner. That's not setting the bar too high, but this guy was too stupid.

McCarthy torpedoed the GOP's ability to draw more blood from the stone that is Benghazigate and now he's turned their caucus into a quagmire. Amazing.

I don't know how these things work, but wouldn't that make him the new front-runner?
Btw, I can't even express how much his sanctimonious little smug face makes my skin crawl.
He's also the Chair of the committee that is trying to defund Planned Parenthood.

Anyone glad that McCarthy has dropped out clearly doesn't understand the door this just opened for right-wing extremism to take over the most coveted seat in Congress. Chaffetz is considered a Tea Party favorite and Webster is favored by the Freedom House Caucus, which is pretty much the Tea Party under a different name. McCarthy was a buffoon, like basically every single politician in D.C., but he at least he was a moderate California Republican. You'll now see a major shift of power, which will lead to even greater division and rhetoric and negativity and friction in Congress. The concepts of compromise and centrism no longer exist. How f*cking pathetic for our country.

Neither of those segments has anywhere near a majority.
All that will happen is the tables will turn. Instead of a moderate being stymied by a minority faction, now the minority faction will never gain a consensus from the majority.
Besides, Obama doesn't even care anymore. He has his pen.

I'm glad you are just focused on the next twelve months but the GOP is expected to maintain majority in the House beyond next year's election (of course, anything is possible in politics). It doesn't matter if the President was Romney, Obama, Clinton or Bush. Having a right-wing extremist in the most powerful seat of Congress all but guarantees dissent and division with any administration for the foreseeable future. At least in the 1990s, O'Neill and Gingrich -- who were incredibly partisan -- found a path to compromise and mutual respect, understanding, etc. With the harsh views and rhetoric now spewed by both corrupt parties, that's no longer a possibility.

The situation is an epic mess, and it's difficult to see how it will be resolved. While being Speaker puts you 2nd in line, it's considered a dead-end job, so Ryan wants no part of it. It's hard to see anyone else in the House who could win a majority. Technically, the Speaker does not have to be a member of the House, so they could look outside Congress, although there is no precedent for that. Does Boehner stay on? If he does, would he be stronger or weaker than before? It's anyone's guess.

The current district map, a result of gerrymandering after the 2010 elections, makes it incredibly challenging for the Dems to win a majority in the House. Of course, it looks like the GOP is doing everything in its power to help the Dems, but it's still a tough ask.
