Streep has the BEST TECHNIQUE ever devised by an Actress! Her homework is sensational...her prep work divine....and every inch of it shows up on screen..
that's not a compliment!
Mangani had no technique - no prep work - no homework - Just HEART! Just INSTINCT! Just LOVE!

Posted: 9/1/05 at 9:02pmI've seen some Anna Magnani films. THE ROSE TATOO comes to mind. But I know I've seen at least one other. She's wonderful. My favorite actress is Anne Bancroft.

Love her in everything.
"The Hours", "Angels In America"..."Death Becomes Her", "Postcards From The Edge".."Sophie's Choice"...... the way she says 'Garcia' in "She Devil".

I don't get you folks who find her too studied and see her acting. Perhaps what you're seeing is someone taking chances with emotion and character, and because you are used to seeing boring American actors play themselves constantly, you get confused when you see a transformation.
In addition, while Meryl was ah-may-zing in the Hours, her part was very easy. Nicole's part was easily the most difficult in the flick, and (nose aside) she transformed effortlessly and unrecognizably. I saw the movie before I knew the cast at all, and didn't know it was her for more than half the movie. Truly amazing work.
As far as the best film performances of all time...I'm gonna have to go with my Cate Blanchett (who is truly the world's best actor).

Posted: 9/2/05 at 11:50amI agree, touchmeinthemorning. Cate Blanchett is the new Meryl Streep: just pure magic.

Not necessarily. There were many layers that had to be revealed in order for her relationship with Richard to work. She brought out the past of her character beautifully.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 2:08pmLove everything she's done. She was terrific in 'Plenty' - her "October nights..." segment was magnificent. A friend of mine really doesn't like her acting - that she is far too mannered. I totally disagree - and the absolute proof is THAT 'Sophie's Choice' moment which haunts you forever.

Oh no...I agree with voiceanth...oy..
I agree--I think she has given some very good performances--Manhattan, Silkwood, Cry in the Dark, Adaptation and The Hours, I find the FILMS she's in are usually dreadful. Music of the Heart is absolutely unwatchable.
Oscar Wins:
As for her nominations, yes, they are some measure of ability. But by that rationale, someone who never received an Oscar would be a poorer actor, director, etc...hardly the case when one considers Hitchcock, Kubrick, Fellini, Scorcese, Welles...god I could be here all day...never won Oscars as Best Director.
I find Judy Davis, Frances McDormand, and Joan Allen to be much more interesting to watch.
I once read a critic describe Meryl's style as "bloodlessly perfect imitations of human beings" not always the case in my opinion, but pretty accurate nonetheless...I just can't get on the "Meryl is God" bus...

Posted: 9/5/05 at 7:06amIs Loni Anderson still acting? She should be in a show with Jessica Simpson playing her daughter and Phyllis Diller playing her mother. That's something I'd watch.
