I think the perfection of MAMMA MIA from Meryl's standpoint was getting to hang out on a Greek isle and make out with Pierce Brosnan.

Clement Atlee would easily be included having not only been the Deputy Prime Minister to Winston Churchill during World War II he then went on to defeat Winston Churchill by a landslide in the '45 general election on a promise of creating for a post war future rather than revelling in a victorious past.
He was then the first Labour Prime Minister to serve a full parliament and command a majority.
And within 6 yeas his governments had created the NHS.
His government nationalised electricity, coal, aviation, etc etc. Which remained profitable industries even thought they introduced things like improved working conditions and a 5 day week for miners.
Despite the fact that post wartime the economy was destroyed he kept unemployment below 3% and built a million new homes.
Free secondary education became a right.
He also managed to lead a cabinet of strong individuals by acting as a chairman rather than as a president and the record of what he set out to achieve and what he then achieved has rarely if ever been matched.
Incidentally Churchill always denied saying the modesty quote having been pleased with his wartime service.
Alternative quote: Christopher Soames, Britain's Ambassador to France during the government of Edward Heath - and later a cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher - remarked that "Mrs. Thatcher was not really running a team. Every time you have a Prime Minister who wants to make all the decisions, it mainly leads to bad results. Attlee didn't. That's why he was so damn good."
And even Mrs Thatcher said "Of Clement Attlee, however, I was an admirer. He was a serious man and a patriot. Quite contrary to the general tendency of politicians in the 1990s, he was all substance and no show".
But my favourite quote about Clement Atlee, not a fan of small talk, was the person who was sat next to him at a function and said "Someone bet me I wouldn't be able to get three words out of you all night" he was quiet for a long time before eventually saying "you lose"
Finally if my ramblings have failed to convert you in 2004 and 2010 University of Leeds conducted a poll of over 200 academics who specialised in 20th century British politics or history.
Both times topping the poll ahead of Thatcher, Churchill, Blair and Lloyd George was....

As for the voting comment I never suggested that anybody else had commanded the support of the majority of the British government since the creation of the three party state.
Merely suggesting that whilst you were thinking that the people in the Billy Elliot audience had voted for her I was just pointing out that anybody under 40 would have been unable to and of those over 40 there more likely to not have voted for the dreadful old witch than likewise.

I remember how the Mamma Mia trailer fooled me into thinking there was a good film behind it; I'm beginning to feel sceptical about this film. They seem to be making much of the woman-succeeding-in-a-man's-world issue but the matter isn't so simple; several women I know do not see her as a triumph of feminism at all.
Gentlemen, shall we join the ladies?

Glad you're so enamored of the works of the Lloyd woman. And you're quite right, the Lloyd Woman did give us that dreadful snooze of a production of MARY STUART, the one where I sat there praying for the axe to fall already so that I could get the hell out of that theater. It isn't necessarily a case of the quality of the source material being "garbage" as such, but of what the Lloyd woman did in bringing it to the screen. She took a harmless trifle of a show and made it one of the most agonizing non-Rob Marshall films of the past decade.
And the trailers with Meryl Streep looking exactly like, well, Meryl Streep wearing some bad prostetic makeup and a Big Wig don't make me believe that the Lloyd woman is going to be doing anything different with her latest work.

I'm not enamored of Phyllida Lloyd's work (that's her name, but you already knew that). Liking one thing doesn't put someone in the tank. But MARY STUART is one of the greatest things I've ever seen, and I will see IRON LADY.

That trailer looks pretty awful to me, as did the teaser. Streep and Broadbent look uncomfortable under a mountain of makeup. The "drama" seems soap-opera-ish, and that heavy-handed "borrowed" score (what movie is that? Braveheart?) ... too much.
And when they dial it down in some scenes, it seems cloying, like "When Harry Met Margaret."
I know these are just clips in the trailer, but none of it is ringing true. Maybe it's just a bad trailer (and teaser).
