Reading the comments, it appears Thatcher is revered as a female counterpart to Reagan by American conservatives, while the Brits despise her. Interesting.

^^ Yes, that's been known for years. Reagan and Thatcher had a good working relationship and did great things, but crazy people hated them.

Not quite. She was (and still is) undoubtedly despised by a vociferous sector but she still managed to win three consecutive general elections. She will go down in history as Britain's third greatest c20th prime minister (after Lloyd George and Churchill). I regard growing up in Britain during the 80s as being a privilege, particularly compared to the mediocrity of successive governments: whether you loved her or loathed her there was no denying she got things done.

Streep looks extraordinary - but why have the director of Mamma Mia at the helm?!

Because it's targeted to a US audience. Remember when Hugh Grant did his dance break to Jump in "Love Actually"? Well in this movie, Streep will walk up to the gate of Buckingham Palace as Yvonne Fair's "It Should've Been Me" plays over the scene. Americans need a loud pop song playing over certain scenes that are too subtle.

Phyllicia Lloyd did direct MAMMA MIA but she also directed a wonderful stage production of MARY STUART. I know that doesn't translate into wonderful filmmaking by any means, but it does suggest to me that she has it in her to bring out great performances from great actresses (Janet McTeer and Harriet Walter were fantastic in MARY STUART), and that she can handle a really good political drama. Jim Broadbent is also a great (Oscar-winning) actor. I'm pretty excited about this project, we'll see how it turns out.

Meh. After the screaming horrorific debacle of MAMMA MIA and the snoozefest of MARY STUART (I mean, come on, how do you make that story boring?) there's no way Phyllida Lloyd is going to get a dime of my money or a minute of my time.

I mean, if I thought it was going to be a real picture of the woman instead of a big fat rimjob, it might be interesting. But that's not particularly likely, is it?

The Streep, yeah, well, whatever, I mean, who cares? At least she's not defiling AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY, so there's that...

Can't stand Thatcher, she may have won 3 terms but she messed the country up something horrible, especially in her last term, she cost so many their jobs, unemployment was awful....and the biggest crime of all.....that bitch took milk out of our schools lol

As for Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher, it's nothing new. She was satirised scathingly at the time of her government on television in Spitting Image and on stage in Anyone for Dennis. She made a point of being seen to go see the latter.

The first time I saw Billy Elliot I looked around the audience during that number and watched the sixty-somethings laughing along with it and I thought "you hypocrites: you were the ones voting for her."

There's an episode of Are You Being Served? (I think it's when Grace Brothers is going to be sold to the Japanese) where the employees of the Ladies & Gents departments go to 10 Downing Street to get help from Margaret Thatcher. While they are there, they are sitting in a conference room. The phone rings and Mrs. Slocombe picks it up and through her conversation we find out she's talking to Ronald Reagan. Ha!!!
