Something feels off. Meryl seems pretty manufactured and I even thought I heard a little Julia Child in the accent. I might be in the minority opinion, who knows.

I am still intrigued at how Thatcher will be portrayed but the January release date gives me some pause about the quality (usually the best time of the movie season for studios to take a dump).

Don't be put off by the January release date, since I'm sure it will open in limited release before that (probably on or around Christmas day) to be awards eligible.

She does look a tad cartoonish in that trailer, though. I almost want to hand her a carrot.

It has a release date of Dec. 16 in the US.

My family is primarily Irish and never had a kind word to say about Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher. The IRA protest songs about her are the catchiest damn things I've ever heard.

That said, I maintain that it should have been Dench.

That trailer certainly did nothing to pull me in. It felt a bit like a generic Streep role.

What a trivial bit of dialogue! A movie about Thatcher, and the first glimpse we see of it is a jokey scene about her pearls, and a backlit shot of her reminiscent of J-Hud singing "And I'm Tellin' You I'm Not Goin'?"

If that's "setting the tone" for this film, it might as well have been written and directed by (the completely horrendous) Nora Ephron.

The big build up to seeing her made it seem like you were going to see Shrek or a Muppet sitting there. The physical transformation should be small in comparison to the drama and what she does with the role. Is this a comedy?

It's a teaser trailer, and I think it gets done what it wants to get done: To ask and answer the question "How the hell is Streep going to look like Thatcher?"

I doubt it conveys what the entire film experience is going to be like.

Also I imagine the scene in question is about how they turned Thatcher into Thatcher. Remember, she was the first female PM. They were terrribly concerned about how she should look and--famously at the time--sound.

I'm putting my money on Meryl.

P.S. Love the little giggle she does.

I do find it amusing that people still wonder "Can Meryl pull this off"? I think she's proven that if it won't be perfect, she won't do it.

This looks absolutely dreadful -- gimmicky reveal and Streep wearing the dental equivalent of Nicole Kidman's Virginia Woolf nose.

And directed by that Lloyd woman who gave us the unspeakable MAMMA MIA. No f**king way am I going to sit through this.

I wasn't expecting to like it, but I was drawn in immediately - I'm now looking forward to seeing the movie, so as far as the trailer goes I guess they've done their job. The bit at the end reminded me of Edith Piaf though.

I'm still hoping for a scene where Thatcher walks up to the gates of Buckingham Palace and peers through the gates with Yvonne Fair's "It Should Have Been Me" playing over the scene.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Wow, that trailer is just awful. I would go see this anyway, because the subject matter interests me, and well, it's Streep. But this trailer, coupled with the fact that the only other work of director Phyllida Lloyd is the dreadful Mamma Mia, gives me pause.

She/her party only ever garnered at most 43% of the UK vote, under the 'joys' of the UK electoral system there was always more people who didn't want her than ever did.

Also any assessment of the 'greatest' UK prime ministers of the previous century that doesn't include Clement Attlee is written by an idiot.

Seriously, Sister - I'd love to read your assessment of why he should be included.

Particularly written for the context of those reading it here on the Off-topic board.
