For Phantom2:
Have you ever dressed up like Carol Channing? No
Have you ever had sexual relations with Brendan Stryker? No
Who do you like better...Corine2 or Pati B?
Both ladies have got to learn the depths that they can swim in. They want to be stars of the high dive but would be better off going down the water slide in the intermediate pool.

"What is your favorite song from 'Hello, Dolly!"?"
I can't play favorites. I love the whole score--even the music added for the Merman version.

"Could you list your favourite Dolly Levi's , those that you have seen, and in the order you rate them please. (No guesses who will top the list!)."
1. Carol Channing
2. Pearl Bailey
3. Phyllis Diller
4. Mary Martin
5. Ginger Rogers
6. Bibi Osterwald (I saw her go on for Bailey!)
7. Martha Raye
8. Ethel Merman
9. Dorothy Lamour (she played it with a brogue that got on my nerves!)
10. Betty Grable (she seemed lost in the production)
11. Jane Morgan (it was a Music Fair tour and she was dreadful)
I think I forgot one but I can always add it when it comes to mind.
The one I forgot was Mimi Hines. It was a summer stock production and she was horrible.
Do I get two questions? What's your favorite lesser known Carol Channing performance? (in other words, besides Dolly, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, etc.)

And now for Yenta:
"what was the very first play you appeared in? Also, I have admired the way you have created a family for yourself. It is a beautiful story. What compelled you to do that?"
First play I appeared In? Hmmm...there were a few school assemblies and that sort of thing. However my first real stage appearance was as a ballroom dancer in THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the Gateway Playhouse. Was it in '63? Dunno.
As far as my family is concerned, I took James in when he needed a place to stay. It was supposed to be temporary but it lasted for 3 years. A true father-son relationship developed between us and the rest is history. I truly feel it was the Lord's Hand involved in this. I absolutely LOVE being a grandfather!

From MEF:
1. What advice would you give to younger teachers who are just entering the field?
Run in the other direction. Teaching today is a disgusting profession. find a job where you'll have a bit of dignity and you won't hate yourself at the end of the day.
2. What was your first Broadway show? Your most recent?
HIGH SPIRITS with Tammy Geimes and Beatrice Lillie.
SPAMALOT was the most recent
3. What are your vices?
I don't smoke, drink or do drugs, so we don't worry about the "serious" vices. I guess my addiction to Christopher Radko ornaments might be construed a "vice". I have enough to put up a third christmas tree if I wanted to.
4. Who are some of your favorite vocalists?
Doris Day
5. If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?
Lourdes. Scroll back for details. I'm seriously considering retiring there in a very short while.
6. What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy afternoon?
Listening to classical music and writing letters. I have quite a few friends in Europe who don't have computers, so I do a lot of letter-writing.
7. What is your favorite book of all time?
WUTHERING HEIGHTS by Emily Bronte. It's a masterpiece of prose and parallelism.

From Bobby Bubby:
"Favorite and Least favorite Dolly Levi, and why?"
Favorite: Carol Channing. She was a big, wide-eyed kewpie doll who captured all of the part's humor and heart.
Least: Betty Grable. Weak all-around. Ginger Rogers did more dancing than she did and Grable was ineffectual in leading the parade.
congrats, dp.

1. What is your favorite word?
My boyfriend's first name
2. What is your least favorite word?
"amazing"
3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Music: Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Jerry Herman
4. What turns you off?
Du rags and bling bling
5. What is your favorite curse word?
I'm not going to say that I haven't used any, but I work in an environemnt where every second word is the "F" word. Cursing disgusts me.
6. What sound or noise do you love?
The sounds of the beach: surf, gulls and wind
7. What sound or noise do you hate?
The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Frank Wildhorn. Sheer noise!
8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
BWW has unleashed my talents as a writer. Not only do I enjoy interviewing Broadway figures, but I think I'm good at it. I wouldn't mind doing it professionally. At least I wouldn't have to answer the perennial question, "Hey Mistuh, can I go to the bathroom?"
9. What profession would you not like to do?
Clean cesspools
10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
I know for a fact that Heaven exists, and when I finally get to walk down that Pearly staircase, I would love to see the Lord God of the Universe at the foot of it singing, "It's so nice to have you here where you belong!" I also expect to see the 12 apostles serving as waiters and leaping over the orchestra pit to welcome me!

"What is Dollypop's favorite foreign Dolly?"
Annie Cordy in the original French version. Although I didn't actually see her, I have the French album and she seems to capture the gusto of the role--with Gaellic charm.

I enjoyed Carol's work in FOUR ON A GARDEN. The show was lame but Carol sparkled. I must also add that Carol's recent performance at Feinstein's was an incredible evening. Her one-woman show is called THE FIRST 80 YEARS ARE THE HARDEST and it's a sensational evening.

Okay, I think I answered everyone's questions. If I left anyone out it was practically accidental.
I have another busy day tomorrow. I'm part of the team reading the Passion at the 9 AM mass and directly from there I'm heading to New Jersey for dinner with my cousins. (Rob Diamond isn't the only one here who has a large family!)
With luck I'll be back tomorrow evening.
Once again, thanks for the honor!
Ciao!
Happy Saturday Dollypop!
Sorry I'm late, but I just got my computer back!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Just a few more questions.........What was my brother like in your class? He is the typical scientist, so I can't even picture him in an English class. Also, what do you and Elizabeth do together. Do you read to her? Play games? Change her diaper? { Let's face it folks, is DollyPop really the type to change diapers? }

Steve was a fine English student. I remember him doing a good job reading the part of Dr. Dysart in EQUUS and he played "Cook" in a summer production of THE MATCHMAKER in the school's courtyard. Those were the days when I actually enjoyed teaching!
Elizabeth just turned one, so I haven't gotten out the Monopoly board yet. Yes, I've already changed her diaper--under the careful gaze of her father!

Bluemoon,
My favorite hymn is Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus". It never fails to move me. It's Mozart as his best.
I also love what Americans refer to as "Immaculate Mary". It's the "Official" hymn of Lourdes and is heard everywhere in that town--even church bells peal it out. There are times when I have a very early morning assignment and I hear the bells ringing out the tune as I hurry across the Esplanade to meet the bus that will take me and the other Hospitaliers to the train station where we'll help "unload" the handicapped who have journeyed all night to get to Lourdes. It's also sung during the evening torchlight procession and each time the words "Ave Maria" are sung, every candle is raised high. It's truly moving to see thousands of candles being raised aloft in homage to Bernadette's Lady. (I can't wait to get back to Lourdes this summer!)
Not sure if anyone has asked this yes, but Dollypop-
- What is your single favorite moment/scene/line in Hello Dolly?
- Aside from Ms. Channing, who would you go pay and see as Dolly now?
- If you directed a revival of Hello Dolly and were able to cut any ONE scene or any ONE song - which would you cut and why?

RobbO, for the sake of decency, I think I'll pass on answering your question.
Craig:
What is your single favorite moment/scene/line in Hello Dolly?
Can anything compare with the very moment that Dolly appears at the top of the stairs at the harmonia Gardens? I mean, she's led that parade at the end of Act One and has resolved to "re-join the human race". The next time we see her is in Act Two in that dazzling red dress which suggests that her blood is flowing again (figuratively speaking) and she descends to flirt with the waiters, who are probably half her age. It's a goosebump moment for me.
- Aside from Ms. Channing, who would you go pay and see as Dolly now?
We've discussed this several times in various threads. My vote goes to Georgia Engle. Carol Channing has told me (and it's part of the interview that I did with her for BWW) that the key to playing Dolly is that the woman is hilariously funny but doesn't realize it. If anyone can pull that off it's Engle. If you need proof, listen to the radio ads she's doing to THE DROWSY CHAPERONE. I also think Harriet Harris could pull it off.
- If you directed a revival of Hello Dolly and were able to cut any ONE scene or any ONE song - which would you cut and why?
Is this "could" or "had to"?
I wouldn't cut anything from the show. If I was FORCED to cut something it would be "The Motherhood March". Oh yeah, it's funny, but Cornelius and Barnaby wind up in the same spots they started the number in, so what's the purpose? Incidentally, Jerry Herman shares this view. He hated the number so much (he really didn't write it) that he insisted it be cut from the film version.
Actually they should have cut the entire film to shreds and spared the world the agony of watching the finished product.
