Hey everybody!!!! Thanks, junglered. This is/was a surprise, I must say. Let me try punch a few answers out before I start working.
1) What inspires you.
Great conversation…when it flows and people are talking and listening (sharing). I love it when you can be part of a conversation and not dominate or feel dominated. I guess it’s the connection between people I’m going for.
2)If you could spend the day with 1 person (dead or alive) who would it be and what would you talk about?
Easy. My grandmother Eileen (Nan). As many people are, she was an angel on earth. I don’t care what we’d talk about…as long as we were playing Canasta and laughing…eating sandwiches and chips…she’d be drinking coffee and I would have coca cola on ice…some Entenmann’s coffee cake as well…it would be heaven on earth.
3) If you were putting together a scrapbook of your life what would make sure is included in it?
Other people’s memories of me I guess either written or photographs. I’ve got objects, pictures a ½ written journal from 17 years ago. All that won’t likely have the same meaning to others and I’ll be gone so…what’s the point? Any scrapbook that I create in life for myself should maybe be buried with me. If others choose to create a scrapbook of my life to keep my memory alive, they should put in what they want…whatever is most meaningful to them…only let me know soon if you need any of my stuff for it, cause who knows where it is now…Jersey, Florida, Chicago, Singapore…speak now before it’s too late!! lol.
What's been the most startling cultural difference for you to adjust to so far?
Hmm…good question. Not to offend any Singaporeans…but it is the racism. It is blatant out here (as it is in many places) and often based on pure lack of knowledge and what is seen on t.v. Many Singaporeans are afraid of African Americans because of what they see on t.v. Many I have met have said they are afraid of the u.s. because they will get shot. There is also strife between the Malaysian, Indian and Chinese here as well. The government tries to outwardly promote unity between the three races but they have a long way to go.
What is your favorite Chicago spot?
The 1st thing that comes to mind is the old ‘S’ curve on Lake Shore Drive. I used to love making that turn either going towards the river or towards the loop and seeing the view…just love it. As for other ‘spots’ as in joints…I can’t pick just one…so here are a few in no particular order: Ann Sather’s, The Bagel near Wellington and Broadway, Steppenwolf, The Belmont L stop, MARSHALL FIELD’S!!!!, Mama Desta’s Red Sea Restaurant, The Hotel Burnham and lastly and surprisingly…feeling a little nostalgic for the old building I used to work in…Three 1st National Plaza.
1, Favorite cookie
Sausalito’s (Miss you too Mom!)
2, Hero as a child
Batman
3, Favorite book as a child
From when I was LITTLE little...the 'Mathew Looney' series and then Encyclopedia Brown...from a little older...Escape from Warsaw, The Outsiders, Flowers for Algernon, To Kill a Mockingbird, Flowers in the Attic (that’s it though for that series…Pedals on the Wind was o.k…the rest are crap, The Hobbit
4, way to spend a rainy Saturday
New York Times Sunday early edition, baby!!!! GOD I MISS THE NY TIMES!!!!!!!!!!! Actually in chi-town I used to buy the Sunday papers early as well. I’ll spend any or every weekend morning reading the papers if I can, rain or shine (but there is awesome calmness to have the paper and a nice piping hot cup of coffee on a rainy weekend day). The media is censored here though, so it’s not the same and often funny…but old habits are hard to break. Reading it online is o.k....but in NO WAY the same.
What are some of the things that you enjoy the most about living in your current home overseas??
My apartment is a 10 minute cab ride at the most from work and it’s ½ the price of a NY Taxi and the apartment is killer! Love the juxtaposition of old Singapore and New…it’s kind of cool. Love the new culinary experiences…fishhead curry anyone?? I was terrified to eat it, but it was delicious. Meeting new people from all over the world..not just Asia.
What are some of the things that you miss the most from your home in the States? What things do you not miss at all??
Miss family, friends loved ones first, obviously. Logan & Toby. I miss tons…you name it. I don’t miss the commute to work. I miss Old Navy. Don’t miss dirty, late NYC subways. The subway here (MRT) is crowded, but unbelievably clean and efficient. I have NEVER been delayed by the MRT in the whole 3 months I’ve lived here. Don’t miss the Times Square crowds. DEFINITELY MISS 2 EGGS, TAYLOR HAM AND CHEESE ON A ROLL…W/ KETCHUP!!!
Which is your favorite Broadway songwriter/songwriter team?
Honestly I really don’t have one so, I’ll have to force this….Kander and Ebb I guess.
What do you do first when you wake up in the morning? ("getting up" doesn't count)
Eat a banana if I have one. There’s a fruit/vegetable market just a couple of minutes from my place so I usually have bananas in the apartment.
If you were given the power, which past Broadway production would you undo so it never could have happened?
You know…I wouldn’t undo any Broadway production. Not to be a freedom fighter for artistic expression, but I’ve never really been too, TOO much of a snob. So even when I hate stuff and rip it apart, I don’t recall ever going so far as to wish it never had happened. That said…I HATED HATED HATED Urban Cowboy…but I perked up for the dance numbers only because the rest just wasn’t my cup of tea.
thanks guys!!! this was fun.
