It looks like Mia Michaels is permanently replacing Mary Murphy as the female judge on "So You Think You Can Dance." I like Mia, but it will be weird watching the show without Mary. I've gotten so use to seeing her. Mia also must've been offered a lot of money since she quit ater the summer season.

I could swear this was announced awhile ago.
I love Mia's choreography, but she's kind of an ahole on the panel, imo. Between her and Shankman's blathering about nonsense, this is going to be a long summer. Still, I can go a VERY long time not to hear that laugh of Murphy's.
I wonder if Mia and Mary simply didn't get along. Interesting that Mia will come back after leaving the show, but only when Mary's no longer a permanent judge. Too bad Mia still won't be choreographing for the show.
That's the tragic part, Matt...seems like a dumb move to me. All the fans wait for a Mia routine.
When will these reality competition shows learn that replacing the loud crazy loose cannon judge will sink your show?
Mia's great but I'd much rather see a weird Sonya routine. I am thrilled Mary Murphy will no longer be sitting at the judges table.
Sonya has really grown and last season was definitely her best. She is definitely earning her right to fill the shoes left by Mia's departure. But Mia's work was brilliant and she had a way of acutely capturing a very specific emotion in such a creative way. Sonya is certainly catching up to Mia's originality, but she doesn't fill the emotional void left when Mia's dances became conspicuously absent. Oddly enough, Tyce topped it with his cancer dance, which was rather surprising since I find most of his choreography to be derivative, trite and empty. Occasionally, Tyce will create some nice visuals, but then he'll totally blow it on the musicality with his lack of phrasing.

Mary's definitely a little annoying.
Sonia is fine, but I prefer the blond contemporary choreog...what'sername. Also, they are certainly going to feature Travis.
doodle - Do you mean Mandy Moore? I'm always surprised when they mention her because I think they're talking about the pop singer. And they can feature Travis all they want. Love him love his work.
I always liked Mary. I thought she was charming, had great critique and was down to earth. Se was loud and a little obnoxious and completely lovable. I'm going to miss her a lot. I'd rather they get rid of Nigel (though I know it can't happen). He gives me the creeps, especially when he tries to be funny.
No more "HOT TAMALE TRAIN!!!!" I'll miss her, but not that screechy scream.
I (obviously) missed this happening: Why did Mary leave? I won't miss her, really, she was annoying; but just wanted in on the scuttlebutt...if there is any.
My biggest problem with Mia being on the panel is simply NOT seeing her choreography. It was often stunning.
Thank God Mary is gone and Mia is taking her place. I think she is always right on with her critiques. I think Sonja is fantastic and will fill Mia's place just fine...
Absolutely hate this news. Mia is more annoying as a judge, than Mary possibly could be. Why is Mary gone?
Edit: Mary is gone as a judge, so she can provide choreography on the show.

Is Mia high pretty much most of the time?....cuz that's what it looks like to me.
"When will these reality competition shows learn that replacing the loud crazy loose cannon judge will sink your show? "
perhaps quite the contrary in this case. when Mia left the show went down hill a little. this "brilliant" idea they had about having the same judges every week, vis a vis IDOL does not work on this show either. I love Adam Shankman but he carried on too much and coupled with Mary's yelling and shouting and no guest judges it was one of the most boring seasons. My guess is they made Mia an offer she could not refuse and she came back and Mary will still be involved somehow. Mia was going to concentrate on coreography too on SYTYCD Canada and be involved there so I guess she has time to judge in the US as well. I remember the very first series. my oh my has it changed from concept to the criteria they use to choose them now. I remember Big Poppa on the first year and there was not big Vegas week.
They need to go back to having guest judges as well. Dan, etc. When Brian Freedman went to the UK for xfactor I felt a void too, but that's just me. Mia is the "outspoken" one too. but i find they all try to be that but Mia succeeds way more than Nigel does. He just comes off tired and cliche. The only thing she did that really bothered me was the whole Brandon thing and then loved him up after. very fake. and he partner in crime in that hate was Lil'C who can seriously never ever come back and it would be fine.

A couple of times Mary and Mia had some genuine repour and laughs, but you may be right.
He's not right. I stated the reason in my previous post. I agree that guest judges works best.
^
well it is a stretch and to be fair he was "wondering"
if they went to guest judging again though it would not matter. many have coreographed and still judged. if they keep it the same, i guess no hope for that. i really though if anytning, they would re think the formula of the show. it is really bad. people look forward to seeing new people every week and different coreographers opinions. mind you i would rather have Mia as a permanent than Mary.
I do NOT like this. I want to see Mia Michaels CHOREOGRAPH for the dancers. A lot of why I like the show has to do with waiting for a routine of hers. I dunno how I feel about all these changes...
I don't like this either. I want to see choreography by Mia Michaels with Mary Murphy on the panel, NOT vise versa!
I suppose it is a matter of taste. Mia will still be coreographing in Canada (or supposed to be) and with Stacey Tucci and Sonya I think that sort of style will be fine. I find Mia an all around judge (not that Mary is not capable) but Mia has done and knows more styles inside and out. For example, even though I am not a fan of Hip Hop (but am of the coreographers in that discipline) - Mia has done that. She is more than just lyrical and contemporary. It is showcased on the show that way though. I know Mary can probably do other styles and is very talented too, don't get me wrong. I hate seeing Nigel judge crump and hip hop because with him I find it's a taste thing and he really does not know the ins and outs of certain dances. I know he is very talented and he came from the old school of pulled up precision of dance but yet he knows his stuff. There are two more coreographers I adore. One is Sean Cheesman who coreographed the first tap routine on SYTYCD Canada and it was fab an he is amazing and the other is Wade Robson. Like I said other than the Brandon sh&t she pulled with Lil C, I like Mia's style and her honesty. I would rather listen to her go on about emotion and feeling something than Mary's woooo hooooooooooooo, and all of that. it is getting old and it isn't funny anymore. Also, I have not seen Mary coregraph since the first season an she is so versed in ballroom I want to see her stuff. I may also put Dan Karaty (sp?) in for Adam sometimes.
CHOREOGRAPH!
woops sorry bout that. i didn't catch that. there is an H in choreograph.
also, it's Kristin not Kristen.
it was just an oversight. (6 times) lol.
No! Wait, HOT TAMALE TRAIN, TAKE ME WITH YOUUUUUUU!
I did mean Mandy Moore, Matt. I prefer her choreog to Sonja's, my favorite being the board room number a few years ago. I actually didnt like some of Sonja's last season.
I want Debbie Allen back as a judge...always pushing her dance school on "Wilshire Boulevard, second floor!"
