I never saw Closer, because I couldn't abide seeing Julia Roberts in a role created Natasha Richardson.

Opera, Natalie's whininess is one of the things about her that drives me crazy. Every character she plays is just whining simp. In defense of her in The Other Boleyn Girl, though, that was just a terrible movie all around. I found the book to be a trifle of a potboiler, but at least it made sense. The movie did not.

When I think of Natalie Portman, I think of the apocryphal "Diary of Anne Frank"/"She's in the attic!" story that's usually said to be about Pia Zadora. When I saw Portman in that on Broadway I so wanted them to find her early and put me out of my misery.

Phyllis, Natalie Portman is one of my favorites, but you can pretty much say whatever you want using that avatar, who's gonna contradict you?
I agree though with some of you guys that Portman isn't good when it comes to period dramas (I liked her in COLD MOUNTAIN though...cue Roscoe's Minghella rant). Similar to Mary-Louise Parker and Julia Roberts, she just has a modern sensibility that clashes with period acting/style. And I'll complain about Theron not getting the role through production and until the movie comes out, she'd have been a Lady Macbeth for the ages, see also Catherine Zeta Jones, whom everyone hates but I'd pay to see her in a role like this.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

And not that Lady Macbeth needs to be ancient but you figure she's the at least the same age as Macbeth if not a little older, and I think Portman just reads so young in everything. And while he's actually only five years older than Portman, Fassbender just reads older than that to me.

Shrug. I'll see it regardless, because Macbeth is one of my favorites, but I don't think this will top the PBS/BBC filming of the Patrick Stewart version for me.

Phyll, have you seen the Judi Dench and Ian McKellen RSC version from the 70s?

Jaw-droppingly great acting.

I have it but haven't gotten around to watching it. Perhaps I will tonight!

Just the thought of her "sigh" in the sleepwalking scene can raise the hair on the back of my neck.

I find Portman to be fascinating. When she's on (Black Swan, Beautiful Girls, Closer, even V for Vendetta) she can be absolutely luminous. But when she's not on...Jesus lord.

I'm one of the few people in the city of New York that appreciated her work in THE SEAGULL. She didn't have the last scene in her, which, I concede, is more than problematic. But there was a great deal to like about her performance. Plus, the entire thing was oddly cast and disjointedly directed.

I'd forgotten Portman was in the abominable COLD MOUNTAIN, she was one of the best things about that vile abortion of a film.

Loved Portman in Closer and Black Swan, but she does seem an odd choice for this. I do find the whole project rather intriguing.

SonofRobbieJ, this is so true. Have you seen even the trailer for GOYA'S GHOST? It's one of my favorite things to watch at 420. Her Spanish accent is one of the best things you'll hear, her acting in it is so bad that, in her own words, Milos Forman's direction was "stop acting like you're in a bad movie." Her performance in CLOSER is one of my obsessions, I was 17 when that movie came out and I idolized her so much in it, still do.

Way to make a bitch feel old. I could stick you with a coat hanger and call it a late term abortion.

But now I'm going to seek out Goya's Ghost!

If they add a nude scene, I'll go see it.

I totally forgot about V for Vendetta (which means it is probably the most recognizable popular such and such films of some sort ever)! That film was such a pleasant surprise and I actually loved everything about it, especially Portman.

I can't hold the Star Wars films against her. George Lucas clearly had no interest in directing any of the actual acting in the prequels.

The only thing I remember about Cold Mountain is Renee Zellweger. I remember walking out saying, "She's getting an Oscar for that" but that's it. I wasn't too thrilled with the novel, either.

Sorry, SonofRobbieJ! But you'll forgive me once you get around to GOYA'S GHOST, it also features Javier Bardem in what must be his worst performance *and* they both wear the most horrendous wigs (only rivaled by HIT LIST) I've seen while they're at it.
I remember watching V FOR VENDETTA but I don't remember anything about it, I have to watch it again. Has anyone seen THE PROFESSIONAL? She made her acting debut in that and was fantastic, IMO. Though none of her credits make me think she's right for Lady Macbeth, she might make a fine Ophelia but nothing close to Kate Winslet, someone else I'd love to see tackle Lady Macbeth.

I'd vote for Cate Blanchett.

Can I just say? I think Cate Blanchett is a ridiculous actress. Talk about camp! I know...I know...judge away.

Portman was magnificent in The Professional. I find I like her more often than I don't. And please, can ANYONE utter a line 'Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo,' and not sound like a moron?

Yes, you can say that. I find her mesmerizing--which I'll grant is not the same thing as being a great actor.

I like Blanchett a good deal as an actress, especially her work in LORD OF THE RINGS and ELIZABETH. She can go over the top, I think, but I always find her interesting to watch. I really disliked her attempt at Katherine Hepburn in THE AVIATOR, though.

It was her performance in NOTES ON A SCANDAL that made me believe she might be the hammiest thing this side of Hickory Farms outlet.

I mean...I definitely am entertained. In a 'Is this actually happening???' kind of way.

I thought she deserved the Oscar for ELIZABETH.

And I actually enjoyed her Hepburn.

SonofRobbiej hit the nail on the head with Portman. She has been wonderful in quite a few things and laughingly awful in many others. It's frustrating to see it happen and it makes her casting in anything questionable because you don't know on what side of the scale her performance will be. She could be a fantastic Lady Macbeth, but she could also be the most inept one. We'll see.

As or Blanchett, I think she is an incredible actress, but agree that her hamminess has gotten in the way of many of her performances. I, too, did not enjoy her Hepburn (but really, who could ever TRULY capture Hepburn and make the performance their own?), but her performance in Elizabeth should be studied by any acting student.

I'd have given her the Oscar just for the scene where the talks to the bishops.

I, too, liked her in ELIZABETH and think she should have won the Oscar. But her work in that (and in everything) feels so performative. I don't know if that's really a critique, because I do find it entertaining. But rarely do I find her work illuminating.
