Did anyone catch this "debate" about the existence of god on Nightline the other night? I'd seen clips of Cameron's The Way of the Master before, although I found the title misleading. I was expecting a hot daddy and slave action and I got Mike Seaver getting all self-righteous and making trannies upset.

This Slate article hits most of the main points, including Cameron's cohorts ridiculous claim that Cameron is jeopardizing his "Hollywood career" with his proselytizing.

Are we not allowed to make trannies upset? Just checking on the rules.

First off, TIGER BEAT has a website?

It still exists? Are there archives? Davy Jones vs. Barry Williams articles, etc.?

I went to the site. It's very pink and glittery and made my teeth ache. However, it did not disappoint, since the only "celeb" on the front page was Sanjaya!

Since when is Kirk Cameron a "prominent voice" in the field of religion?!?

re: Mike Seaver Will Save Your Soul

Well, he was Bibleman for a while. A born-again superhero. And I have stumbled on his Christomercial series with that guru of his. If I were an impressionable young person it would make me crap my pants. Their basic premise is that a sin is a sin is a sin to God. Being rude to the bus driver, being Hitler, it's all the same to God. Makes Him (and their God IS a Him) furious.

One night, I stumbled onto the first two Left Behind movies on cable. I was riveted and forgot I could have just taped them and gone to bed and I stayed up too late. Kirkie was in those too.

So, that's his "prominence," I guess.

Whoops! My mistake. Bibleman is TV's Willie Ames, Betty Buckley's stepson on Eight is Enough.

If I hadn't let my subscription to Tiger Beat expire way back when I bet I coulda told them apart.

Namo, I see the Left Behind videos all the time at my video store's "previously viewed" movie bin. Can't remember if they're on VHS or DVD, possibly both available. VHS are $2, DVD $3-5. Let me know if you'd like me to look for them next time I'm there.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

The movies are sooooooo messed up, yet riveting. I mean, how can you depict the apocalypse on a low budget? But still, I couldn't look away when the rabbi annouced that he realized that Jesus really IS the son of god!

Their basic premise is that a sin is a sin is a sin to God.

I'm a little rusty on my Christianity, but isn't that pretty much the case with most Christian religions? I know there are the mortal and venial sins within Catholicism, but it was always my understanding that to other religions all sins were equal (Even though we all know sodomy is really the very worst).

But why go to all the trouble of creating a Top Ten if all sins really are equal? Although I can definitely see how orchestrating genocide is exactly the same as calling my mom a doodie-head in front of her friends when I was eight. Naturally, this will condemn me to a buring pit for eternity by, as George Carlin pointed out, a God who LOVES me.

It's just the Christians who made them the top ten. There are 613 in the Torah.

I watched this show. The Slate article, obviously liberally slanted, misses it. Athesists should have been embarrassed at what was representing them.

The woman tried to argue that Jesus never existed as a person (despite mentions in several writings of the time period). While Cameron was speaking, the man audibly muttered, "What a numbnuts". The atheists were very sarcastic and had no substantial argument or rebuttal.

I wish they had sent some intelligent atheists who could have made a decent argument for their point of view.

Well, I'd agree that the atheist contingent wasn't exactly stellar, but I don't think the Christians had much to be proud of either. The conclusive "proof" that there is a god was essentially "because there is."

Actually, I think the article did in fact state that the athiests acted "juvenile". I think both Christians and atheists were sold short in this "debate". Thanks, ABC!

It does sound like an OK premise for a show, but, really, couldn't the producers have found people better able to represent either side?

They should have gotten Ted "The Million Dollar Man" DiBiase for the debate. He's the only born again minor celebrity whose opinion I value.

Doesn't trying to prove the existence of god defeat the purpose of religion? Religion is based on faith, be it in Jesus or Ganesha or whoever; any attempt to prove existence is tantamount to blasphemy--it implies that one NEEDS proof to believe, which if such proof existed would make said religion a fact and no longer a system of beliefs. It would then become a science.
