Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

With more than a third of precincts reporting on Tuesday evening, a constitutional ban on marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Missouri was leading with a better than 2-1 margin. When final tallies are announced on Wednesday, the measure is expected to pass with 60% or more of the vote. A simple majority is all that is required for the amendment to become law.

Missouri's was the first such ballot-box vote in the nation since Massachusetts began legally recognizing gay marriage in May. National groups on both sides of the debate consider the vote a litmus test for which campaign strategies work and which ones don't as the battle spreads to ballot boxes around the United States. At least nine other states, and perhaps as many as 12, will vote on similar amendments this year. Four states already have anti-marriage amendments. "What happens here in Missouri could have a tremendous impact on the rest of the nation's other elections," said Vicky Hartzler, spokeswoman for the group backing the amendment, the Coalition to Protect Marriage in Missouri.

The amendment prompted national gay rights groups to send more than $100,000 to the Missouri organization fighting the ban, and they expect to spend millions of dollars around the country before the general election in November, when most of the ballot initiatives will be decided. "Missouri is the first one," said Seth Kilbourn, national field director for the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign. "It's really important that the gay and lesbian community and our allies wage as strong a campaign as we can to send a strong message to the other campaigns that are going on out there."

The debate intensified last year after a landmark court decision in Massachusetts cleared the way for same-sex weddings there, prompting several states to push for constitutional amendments that ban gay marriage. Missouri and 38 other states already have laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, but supporters of the amendments fear the laws are susceptible to being tossed out by a court unless written into the state constitution. Louisiana residents are to vote on a marriage amendment September 18. Then Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Utah are to vote on the issue November 2. There also are initiatives pending in Michigan, North Dakota, and Ohio.

At this point I kinda feel like those straghties can keep their stupid marriage laws. I don't want it. I'll just continue running around naked and making out with other men right in their faces... only an idiot whouldn't be able to see how discriminatory this is....

I'm glad the blacks in the 60's didn't have to rely on a public vote to pass the Civil Rights Act. This whole strategy of labeling judges as 'activist' seems to be working - isn't THAT fun for some of us!

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

My mom JUST called from St. Louis to let me know that right now the news is reporting that it is passing with 77%. She also said all the area churches had banners outside promoting this amendment. How sick is this? I am totally ashamed to be from that state. Gay marriage is already banned in Missouri. Why do they have to go to extra measures to double-ban it. Its pathetic. I'm certianly glad that I live in NYC. My mom summed it up well "its disgusting".

Kids, I think another civil rights movement is in order at this point.

As a Missouri resident, I'm proud to say I voted against it. Fat lot of good that did, apparently. Let's hope my vote for Kerry in November will be more effective.

I don't see how this is ever going to be made right. There are so many people who are convinced that homosexuality is a sin because of a book of fairy tales past down from generation to generation, translated from language to language and still looked upon by some as the utter truth.

Hmmmm, Cats - interesting can of worms you just opened. Eventually, fear may not be able to overide epirical knowledge - but apparently not today.

My boyfriend and I will be getting our absentee ballots and voting for Kerry in MO. It is such a swing state that every vote will count. So if you live in MO, or know anyone who does - make sure to tell them to vote .... and hopefully not for Bush. Although looking at the outcome of todays vote, I'm a little nervous.

Woah now. Let's not go overboard here. I am a Christian and I support Gay marriage. I mean, these people probably haven't even read the Bible and if they have they are taking verses out that they can use for their fight without reading the rest of it. I mean, in one verse it says that homosexuality is evil.......well, right before that it says that eating shelfish is evil and I love me some shrimp y'all. But my point is, people take anything (Bible, constitution, Little Women, etc.) and make into whatever they are trying to get across.

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

But people who spout their hate from the bible only choose what they want to believe and what's outdated. They say of course they're not supposed to sell their daughters into slavery and kill their children and they can eat shellfish now, but they can still hate fags because that hasn't changed. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

No no no no no. You do not choose who you are. THAT is the thinking that causes so much sh*t.

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

Exactly. I mean, the government believes that this country was founded on Christian values (which isn't entirely true since our four fathers were Deists, not christians) and the majority believes something because they were always taught was the truth. I mean, if people were taught that eating shelfish will send you straight to hell, we would have an overpopulation of shrimp. Like I said before, people take things out of the Bible ignoring others, which isn't right at all.

Ok, you do not choose to be anything. I mean, I KNOW I am straight. It wasn't a choice I made, and other straight people forget that.

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

sorry...i didn't mean to start anything. I'm a 17 year old who lacks tons of common knowledge. i don't do good with expressing my thoughts on paper...or in this case, on a message board. I know u don't "choose" to be something, i guess i should've worded it better.

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

Thats Crap.... I live in Kansas.. Close to Kansas City... and I think its awful... that human beings get to decide other peoples lives. I'm sorry everyone should have the right to get married.. no matter what gender you are... Here is my thought...
If I have to be married to the same Man forever and suffer so should everyone else...

So MO... Screw YOU! Jerks

re: Missouri passes same-sex marriage ban

out of tune - people who do not persecute us are the last people we need to make feel bad. Your intent was understood - it's just that this is a VERY emotional issue for some. Please don't think you have to apologise - I, for one, am VERY thiankful for 17 year olds who are not judgemental.
