Musical TREASURE

Love the pics, Carlos! You have some great shots of Olivia Hussey. I had a boyhood crush on her in this movie and Romeo & Juliet. Such a beauty! She had either just given birth or just found out she was pregnant when filming began (I forget which) ... but it's why she is a little more "voluptuous" than usual in Lost Horizon.
One of my collector-friends in L.A. has a docoumentary on 16mm that heavily features the lost (and still-missing) "fertility dance." It's quite a big production number, with Olivia dancing in the middle of many scantily-clad chorus boys/men, all flailing long orange scarves around. LOL It sounds kinda ridiculous ... which mostly it is, I guess ... but it still looks impressive because they basically took over that entire outdoor set with the pageantry of it.
I also love those last two movie posters! The top one was by a guy who did so many of the TV Guide covers in the '70s. It has such a distinctive look!
A production still (taken from the original negative) of the lost Fertility Dance. This extended sequence followed the song "Living Together, Growing Together" in the film.
I've seen footage of the infamous fertility dance and it looks ambtious. Was it cut out of the film due to running time?
I've always wanted to hear the other songs that didn't make the film's final cut.
Now I know why Ms. Hussey looked extraordinarily voluptous in this particular film, thanks Besty!
You have a good eye Besty. Bob Peak illustrated that poster. He also illustrated for many publications including as you've mentioned, TV Guide.
His other famous posters include: MY FAIR LADY, APOCALYPSE NOW, CAMELOT, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, MAME and HAIR.
Here is the poster artwork in more detail. The original file is
3000 pixels in height so I won't even try to upload in it's original dimensions. It is truly a beautiful piece.
I read the novel for English class my junior year, and, obviously, the last thing that came to my mind was a kitchy Bacharach musical. That said, I thank my lucky stars for coming across this thread. This is all sorts of incredible!! I'm obsessed.
I must know... Does a karaoke/instrumental track of "The Things I Will Not Miss" exist? Saxon Black and Gwen Kennedy MUST sing this when she returns from NYC.
Carlos---those photos are beautiful! Thanks for sharing them!
You're very welcome Besty. I love to "Share The Joy" that is LOST HORIZON. :)
This poster was illustrated by Howard Terpening. His most famous work in the movie poster arena was the one he illustrated for THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
It's fun to find this here. Lately I've been fascinated by another 1970s musical disaster: "At Long Last Love." I was shocked to find it on Netflix-on-demand.
Speaking of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, this is one of the many films Julie Andrews declined. Hussey was pregnant when she made LOST HORIZON. She was ill most of the time. No one knew what was wrong, and she kept being questioned about her eating habits.
I would like to know which of you will be paying my medical expenses for my stay at the local State Mental Hospital for the Musical Comedy Damaged.
For the first time since the 70s, due to this thread, I watched Lost Horizon in its entirety.
Since then I have developed a split personality due entirely to the song The Things I Will Not Miss.
Who am I? Olivia or Sally? Sadly, I have become both. This has resulted in bad singing and even worse Hermes Pan choreography, complete with jumping on my dining room table and spinning.
Dear Posters,
Give generously towards my recovery.
^ Love it! Just watched it myself again yesterday. I will join you in a rendition of "The Things I Will Not Miss". Take your pick: Olivia or Sally and I'll follow your lead! :)
"Lost Horizon" is scheduled for dvd this year. Don't know the exact date yet, but it's coming out in 2011. There will be some extras, not sure if the fertility dance was found in it's entirety. I believe the musical score was located, just not the actual footage.
I remember the night that it premiered in Westwood. Merv Griffin did an entire episode of his nightly show from the premiere - red carpet arrivals, interviews, film clips, etc. That would be wonderful if that showed up on the dvd - or at least on Youtube. Someone's gotta have that - somewhere.
Love the Peak poster. I have it framed and mounted and it's hanging in my guest room.

Andrea Willis did the singing for Olivia Hussey (Sally did her own). Diana Lee, Bill (Lt. Cable, Capt. Von Trapp) Lee's daughter, sang for Liv Ullman.
JohnBoy2, Andra Willis was the name of the singer who sang for Olivia Hussey. She was a regular on THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW from 1967-1969.
Yes, here's Andra Willis, the singing voice for Olivia Hussey in Lost Horizon:
EDIT: Carlos Alberto -- send me a PM (yours are blocked). I have info for you.
Hey Besty, you can PM me now. I had no idea they were blocked. :)
In 2004 a very interesting thread was started over at the Film Score Monthly Board regarding the Pioneer Special Edition Laserdisc release of LOST HORIZON which led to a very passionate, often heated discussion of the merits/demerits of the film.
Joecaps, who is a board member actually worked on the restoration and production of the Pioneer Laserdisc release of LOST HORIZON and he has some very interesting information to share regarding the film and it's stars while working on the project.
It's a pretty lengthy thread (12 pages in all) and the latest post to the thread was made April 10th.
In reading it you can see the two polar opposites of people who absolutely abhore this film and people who love it to no end.
LOST HORIZON Thread on FSM
Okay, you all just blew my mind!
I had no idea that Andra Willis was the girl with the crooked mouth on the Welk show!! She bugs the crap outta me when she's on! She must've done "Oh, Johnny!" a dozen times...so annoying!
Now I have to like her because I LOVE "Share the Joy" so much.
Thanks for the info!
"I must know... Does a karaoke/instrumental track of "The Things I Will Not Miss" exist? Saxon Black and Gwen Kennedy MUST sing this when she returns from NYC."
Not sure, JSwanson, but I believe the Pioneer laser disc release contained a music-only track of the entire film. If you can get your hands on it (and someone with a laser disc player), you might be able to obtain it that way. Not the easiest route, I admit. It's long out of print and doesn't sell cheaply.
And CarlosAlberto---to answer your question, the fertility dance was cut because it got laughs in previews. So they took it out.
Although I wonder how true this is, considering how much they left IN that still gets laughs. If they followed that philosophy throughout the preview process, it would likely have had a running time of 25 minutes.
