I just realized that the song running through my head ever since I read that story is Ben Folds Five's "Your Redneck Past."
Um, yeah. My mind is a strange, strange place.

So you mean to tell me, that the man, who is a heartbeat away from the Oval Office, has trouble telling a full grown man from a quail?
Check please!!

I'm imagining a new batch of bumper stickers:
Cheney was just upset that the quail didn't greet him as a liberator.
Although we do our best to only target the enemy, some collateral damage is regretably unavoidable.
Hunting with Cheney: Still safer than riding with Kennedy.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 8:25pmI think some yelled "Duck" to the attorney and Cheney got all excited and shot away.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 9:42pmLol, Master... "big game hunter sets his sights on Hitler"... With very little trouble, one can imagine Cheney having delusions of grandeur while hunting domestically raised quail with clipped wings...

That lawyer is going to get a lot of referrals and a lot of money for the rest of his frickin life!
He should wear a badge "I got shot by Dick - and all I have is this buckshot wound to show for it."

Or, he could say "I got shot by dick, and all I got was bucked."
The whole thing is funny to me. If it was anyone else, they would be investigated.
The fact that he travels with a roving medical team and ambulance is a Saturday Night Live episode in the making. I can just see this on the next episode.

Woohoo! This is a running joke already. From USA Today, referring to Apolo Anton Ohno's fall in the 1500-meter race:
"Could have been worse. He could have gone hunting with Dick Cheney."

Posted: 2/12/06 at 11:29pmHe was hunting with only two other people...and he shot one of them by mistake. That's a 50% rate of error. Not good.

From www.bradblog.com:
UPDATE FROM BRAD: Several sources (Fox, CNN, Reuters) confirming incident, but reporting it took place yesterday (Saturday) at 5:30pm Texas time. Why was the story withheld from the media until now? Almost 24 hours later? The man is reported to be in stable condition, apparently, at this time. Did they wait until they could report that he would be fine before releasing it at all? Would we have found out about it at all, therefore, if the man had died? Did they wait until after it was too late to be discussed discussed on the Sunday News shows?
Just some of the questions I expect we'll be hearing shortly.

just to answer flitty's query: yes, they eat them. the shot used to hunt quail (birdshot) is small and there's generally less of it in a shell, particularly in a 28 gauge like slick dick was shooting. does require some plucking. my brother, the avid hunter and fisherman, served quail that he'd bagged at his rehearsal dinner and i was pleased not to find any stray shot in my dinner.
from the reports i read, the gentleman was re-joining the party without announcing his presence. when you're out in the woods with guns, you always make damn sure everyone knows where you are.

My Republican friends in Jackson Hole have complained about Cheney's bad hunting manners for years.
