They are really downplaying this story...only took him to the hospital because there happened to be an ambulance standing by. Yet the guy was still in ICU 24 hours later.
Speaking of 24 hours later, how manipulative can you get? Talk about delayed reporting to avoid maximum exposure...

More Questions Raised About Delay in Reporting Cheney Misfire
By Greg Mitchell

NEW YORK The more than 18-hour delay in news emerging that the Vice President of the United States had shot a man, sending him to an intensive care unit with his wounds, grew even more curious late Sunday. E&P has learned that the official confirmation of the shooting came about only after a local reporter in Corpus Christi, Texas, received a tip from the owner of the property where the shooting occured and called Vice President Cheney's office for confirmation.
The confirmation was made but it is not known for certain that Cheney's office, the White House, or anyone else intended to announce the shooting if the reporter, Jaime Powell of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, had not received word from the ranch owner.
One of Powell's colleagues at paper, Beth Francesco, told E&P that Powell had built up a strong source relationship with the prominent ranch owner, Katharine Armstrong, which led to the tip. Powell is chief political reporter for the paper and also covers the area where the ranch is located south of Sarita, about 60 miles from Corpus Christi. Armstrong did not notify reporters at larger papers in Dallas, Houston, Austin or other cities.
Armstrong called the paper Sunday morning looking for Powell, who was not at work. When they did talk, Armstrong revealed the shooting of prominent Austin attorney Harry Whittington, who is now in stable condition in a hospital. Powell then called Cheney's office for the confirmation around midday. The newspaper broke the story at mid-afternoon--not a word about it had appeared before then.
The Cheney spokesman Powell spoke with, Lea Anne McBride, would not comment on whether the Cheney office or the White House would have ever released the information had the Caller-Times not contacted them.
"I’m not going to speculate," McBride said, according to Powell. "When you put the call into me, I was able to confirm that account."

This story is my favorite just because I can't help but makeup stories as to why Cheney shot him.
Like, his calls to pull out of Iraq got tiresome,
he called his daughter "that chubby lez"
he said,"No wonder Bush is president. He's much smarter than you."
he kept asking him if his heart was feeling alright
he kept making jokes using the word "Scooter"
he kept talking about how nice the wind felt as it blew through his full head of hair
(the possibilities are endless)

touch, i've been doing the same thing since i heard about it.
it was payback for a skeet shooting afternoon in which the victim kept yelling "halliburton" instead of "pull."
during an innocuous conversation about mary asked dick if baldness runs in the family, "if ya know what i mean."
asked one two many times if dick had seen any of those body armor stories.
would not stop humming the theme song from "there's something about mary."

Today I got spam from "Hunt Whitman," clearly NOT a good nickname for Cheney.
(But that doesn't mean he's not behind the spam movement. Surely he's making money from it in one way or another.)

How could this incident have been prevented? Whose feet would you lay more blame?
I've never gone hunting or even held a gun, so I'm interested to hear your feedback.

This is funny:
CHENEY SAYS SHOOTING OF FELLOW HUNTER
WAS BASED ON FAULTY INTELLIGENCE
Believed Shooting Victim Was Zawahiri, Veep Says Vice President Dick Cheney revealed today that he shot a fellow hunter while
on a quail hunting trip over the weekend because he believed the man was the fugitive terror mastermind Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Mr. Cheney acknowledged that the man he sprayed with pellets on Saturday was not al-Zawahiri but rather Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old millionaire lawyer from Austin, blaming the mix-up on "faulty intelligence."
"I believed I had credible intelligence that al-Zawahiri had infiltrated my hunting party in disguise with the intent of spraying me with pellets," Mr. Cheney told reporters. "Only after I shot Harry in the face and he shouted 'Cheney, you bastard' did I realize that this intelligence was faulty."
Moments after Mr. Cheney's assault on Mr. Whittington, Mr. al-Zawahiri appeared in a new videotape broadcast on al-Jazeera to announce that he was uninjured in the vice president's attack because, in his words, "I was in Pakistan."
An aide to the vice president said he believed that the American people would believe Mr. Cheney's version of events, but added, "If he was going to shoot any of his cronies right now it's a shame it wasn't Jack Abramoff."
At the White House, President George W. Bush defended his vice president's shooting of a fellow hunter, saying that the attack sent "a strong message to terrorists everywhere."
"The message is, if Dick Cheney is willing to shoot an innocent American citizen at point-blank range, imagine what he'll do to you," Mr. Bush said.
Elsewhere, aviator Steve Fossett completed his three-day journey around the globe, setting a world record for wasting both time and money.

I saw McClellan's press briefing on the subject while I was eating lunch, or at least trying to. I think at this point he couldn't give a straight answer to a question if he tried.

Conservative Republican Jon Podhoretz weighs in:
WHAT CHENEY MUST DO [John Podhoretz]
This story is a very big deal, despite all the mitigating factors -- the accident involved a friend, his medical team was right there to help, and all that. Something like this has never happened before, and it is a genuinely disturbing thing to think that the vice president of the United States actually shot somebody last weekend, even for fans of his. It's disturbing as well that there was a news blackout that lasted nearly a day about this serious incident. It seems beyond question that the vice president is going to have to go before the cameras, explain what happened, and show genuine remorse for his actions, however inadvertent. It's a difficult challenge for someone as reticent as Dick Cheney. But unless he does so, and makes a good showing of it, he will be damaged goods for the remainder of the Bush presidency.

How can anyone actually think this is going to happen in an administration that has repeatedly dodged testifying under oath? These are not people for whom admitting they f*cked up is EVER easy. It's not going to start here. Cheney's soul would probably revert to the property of Satan if he ever admitted being wrong.

If you haven't noticed, people. The media is turning against the administration. (As it should have long ago.)
Just like they did on the Nixon administration.
Next comes Congress.
Then come Articles of Impeachment.

Not to be contrary, but there are privacy issues as to disclosing the medical condition of Mr. Whittington. The VP Press Office could possibly violate HIPAA by disclosing health information of him without permission.

BTW, this in one of Dick Cheney's "hunting" trips.....
The birds are captive and released to be shot....

Lake Oconee Shooting Club Co-Owner/ Manager Craig Hancock and Vice President Dick Cheney between rounds on the trap field.
Or as somebody statement on the internet:
many possible scenerios, but some:
1) It takes awhile to make up a good lie where you can blame the victim, especially when you are caught daily in lies and everyone is now looking for them.
2)You look like a complete incompetent fool when you shoot someone at the hunting equivelency of paintball. This was a hunting patch stocked with loads of little tiny quail for rich fat losers to shoot who can't really hunt fairly. It's a game like paint ball, only little tiny creatures die and sometimes if you are really pathetic, your hunting partner.
3)It makes people wonder if you'd know gun safety if you hadn't been too busy to be drafted.
4)It reminds people you are a chickhawk who wants to play soldier. It reminds people that when you go out with a gun, it is for play. Unlike the men and woman dying everyday in Iraq.
