feinstein9-- i was going to say the exact same thing. much of that show upset me, but that was the ultimate moment of disquiet.
To add to Assassins: at the end of Giteau's song when his body falls from "the gallows".... it creates this weird feeling within you because there is an optimistic tune blaring but a man was just hanged. I think it also bothers me because I get really disturbed with the punishment of hanging...I don't know what it is about that one thing.
"Surfin' USA" from GOOD VIBRATIONS
I didn't see it on Broadway, but when I saw "Tommy" at a local theatre, the scenes where little Tommy was getting abused were disturbing. Also the scene where little Tommy witnesses the shooting and when Uncle Ernie comes over and sings the song "Fiddle About" and rapes Tommy.
This thread is funny!
Sweeney never disturbed me. Not nearly as much as the almost rape of Anita in WSS
How 'bout just "good vibrations"?
Suzanne Sommers camel toe "ick". Heather and Adam during previews of Aida in Chicago accidently tumbling out of the "tomb" was a "gasp".
The end of 'NIGHT MOTHER was rather disturbing. It really got to me, and I didn't realize appluase was happening for a few seconds cuz I was so shocked and depressed.
I am with feinstein9 & Millie42. The Zapruder film being played over the white t-shirt that NPH is wearing was absolutely bone chilling!

Well said, and my sentiments exactly!
OMG..the "death stare" ahha...
were you guys there??? that would freak me out....
don't take picturs during the show unless you want Adam to kill you! ahha...well..you shouldn't anyway...
and in Chicago's Aida tumbling out of the tomb?? how'd that happen?
More than the cannibalism aspect of Sweeney, in the original production, I was bothered far more by Judge Turpin's "How sweet you look in that light muslin gown".
Unfortunately for Magruder, he missed the flagellation...
I have to go with:
"Is it possible for someone to hit ya hard and for it to feel like he kissed your hand?"
"Yes Louise, it's possible for someone to hit ya hard, real hard and loud, and for you to not feel anything at all..."
Or something like that from Carousel.
Though the gay sailors song, "Blow High, Blow Low" is a laugh!
I agree that many scenes in Sweeney disturbed me. The finger(or fingernail or whatever) in the ground meat, the throat slashing, the bird that gets its neck broken by the Beadle, the really loud whistle . . . for me Sweeney was gross and disturbing the first time, but over time, it has really grown on me, I guess it takes time to warm up to a very dark show about revenge, cannibalism, theft and all those other "things we hold near and dear to our hearts"
This isn't really a disturbing moment I experienced at a show, but a shocking moment that happened was when I saw West Side Story at a local theatre. When Tony got shot, the gun shot was really loud and I jumped in my seat. A lot of people did that and they had surprised looks on their faces.

The Judge's version of "Johanna," in Sweeney Todd. Not in the New York production, but it was restored in the recent concert. I love the song, but it definitely rates high on my list of disturbing moments.
"Real Big News" from Parade, as well as the song the factory girls sing, after being coached to do so by Dorsey. The fact that people could make up such horrible things about someone they don't like (or know)... and then the overlapping and how the frantic lying seems to grow towards the end, until Lucille's "Let me alone..." Well, that's in "Real Big News," not the other song.
The name's escaping me now, but the song in Assassins when they all convince Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot JFK ("I respect you," "I admire you," "we're your family," "make us proud of you..."). Chilling.

I'm not sure that song has a name, but on the CD it's called "Take a look, Lee". I agree, it's very disturbing.

Yeah, the judge basically contemplating incest in Sweeney is a lot more disturbing then the cannibalism, because, like somene said, the cannibalism is portrayed in a very light manner.
The gang-bang ballet in Thou Shalt Not.
