Brad Pitt, too. God knows who he had to sleep with to get nominated for "12 Monkeys".

I don't think I've seen anyone play the same person as much as Meg Ryan.

I musta missed it.
Brad Pitt, like Tom, has had some good movies in the past. I think his last great film was FIGHT CLUB. I will always remember Tyler Durden.

Those who say that Sean Penn plays the same character all the time, obviously did not see The Falcon and the Snowman.

Brad Pitt IS overrated, but he's so attractive, it doesn't even MATTER.

Doesn't anyone else think that, although a great actor, De Niro always plays De Niro in his latest films ?
And I think that Russel Crowe is so over the top in his films.

I agree that Tom Cruise is wooden. I'm floored that people actually think he can act. Maybe by High School Theatre standards, but that's about it.
Mike Myers is funny for about 2 1/2 minutes. After that he just neeeds to go away and be quiet.
Will Ferrell? I loved "Elf". But, he's just freakin' EVERYWHERE now. And it's just too much. He's headed streight for the "I-can't-stand-him-anymore-cuz-I'm-sick-of-looking-at-him" file.

i would never say this actor is "overrated" as i believe he cannot be regarded highly enough--but he is stuck in a corner and that is, morgan freeman. he is always the good, wise moral all seeing narrator. even then, he is riveting to me (i remember i watched SEVEN so much longer than i wanted to because i was interested in his character's wounds)
remember when he played Fastblack--the yoohoo swilling homicidal pimp? those were the days. i would love to see him play a full-on psycho or something extreme and challenging. or a flamboyant, selfish, venal character. what can i say--i love the guy--but the time has come for him to stop driving miss daisy.

All these responses of WIll Faerrell, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler (all terrific comedians) aren't exactly the type of performers associated with prestige and prowess, but for audience appeal...I don't think that was what the original intent of this thread. Having said that...
My first reaction was Denzel Washington...it scares me that I agree with Cruel...
I think Sean Penn is a bit full of himself, but certainly talented.
As for the ladies...
Jessica Lange, Jessica Lange, Jessica Lange...please return your Oscars and give them to the rightful owners, Teri Garr and Miranda Richardson (weak year i know)

Let me add Jim Carey to "overrated".
Yes, I think he can act. But, the all the fuss? I don't get it.
He's another one I can only take for about 2 1/2 minutes.

I think Jim Carrey is a hilarious and singular talent--not a great actor, but neither was Groucho.

Jessica Lange is definately a good actor...have you seen her in Titus? Did you see the mid-90s TV version of Streetcar? uh-may-zing.
With that said, I agree wiht the Sean Penn thing...he works hard, and you can tell it...he always seems like the actor.
My least favorite is Kevin Spacey...I don't get it. He throws on a funny voice, and everyone thinks he's God's gift. He always plays himself...just with different funny voices, and never particularly subtly or with any aspect of humanity added to the script.
Two words more: Gwenyth Paltrow. Who was less deserving of their Oscar?

I agree with Jim Carrey. Also, I can take Robin Williams for less than 2 1/2 minutes. I find him overrated as anything, but an annoying ADHD sufferer.

When I coach people who have had tons of Strasberg, I always mention the problem with using substitution for scenes. And my example of that problem is always Julia Roberts' scene in Notting Hill:
"I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love me."
She is SO not in that scene...she's clearly crying about a dead aunt or something. And it detaches us all from the story.
Julia is FAMOUS for that kind of mistake.
But, at least she has something going on upstairs...Paltrow is so dead inside, I think we could open her up and ashes would spill out.

Love Lange...Country, Titus, Frances.
But I want her oscar for tootsie back...it should've gone to Leslie Ann!
Most overrated actor: Kevin Spacey AND Denzel
Most overrated actress: was Nicole Kidman until The Others, now I dont think she stinks anymore...but her oscar needs to go to Julianne Moore. I'll have to say Paltrow wins my vote.

I think Jessica Lange is a mannered, overwrought mess...
Paltrow should have lost to Fernanda Montenegro
I also avoid Williams, except Garp and Doubtfire (yes, i actually like that one)
I think Nicole has become overrated with her best work behind her, impressive as i think it is (To Die For and Eyes Wide Shut)
I never got Julia Roberts either...

Really, Fernanda over Cate Blanchett (who gave, imho, one of the best screen performances of all time in Elizabeth -- subtle, inspired, and frankly, so NOT Cate in real life)?
I can see how someone would see Jassica as mannered. I just have never minded actors who get branded as mannered...it makes it interesting for me...and if I told everyone on the subway that was acting odd that they were too mannered, I'd never stop. I think interesting is the second most important job of an actor (second to being human). Overwraught, though, I often agree with...Jessica is not the subtlest when it comes to emotion or breakdowns.
I want Nicole to have something new that is amazing, but at this point, I sadly agree. I think her best work was The Hours. Maybe if she takes a decade off, she'll find something great.

I wouldn't say overwrought - because her breakdowns are always compelling to watch. I never find myself thinking, oh for pity's sake, Jessica, SHUT UP!!! On the contrary, I'm fascinated every time.
