I wouldn't say overwrought - because her breakdowns are always compelling to watch. I never find myself thinking, oh for pity's sake, Jessica, SHUT UP!!! On the contrary, I'm fascinated every time.

Touch--i believe you are referring to J-Ro's performance in NOTTING HILL. ABOUT A BOY would then have been called ABOUT A BOY...AND HIS HORSE.

Best breakdown ever -- Judi Dench playing Lady M. in the RSC film version of the Scottish play.

She lets out this yell during the damned spot scene...excuse me? Have I ever seen anythng more amahzing?

Well, I didn't really like the FILM Elizabeth...though i'd pick Cate over Gwyn ANY day...

Every time i think of Jessica, i think about the way she smokes and rubs and touches her face...

I think Nicole has become too interested in being a star to be a good actress anymore.

jessica lange gave a stunning performance in that cable tv film where she is the wife of the man (tom wilkinson) who gets a sex change. she is hit and miss with me -- but i like her a lot.

The main three kids in the Harry Potter movies are WAY over-rated.

Let's not forget Denise Richards. Other than having a barbie doll smile and big boobs, what elese does she have... other than half of Charlie Sheen's money?

Speaking of the Sheens, let's not forget Martin. The only thing he ever did worth a damn was playing Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg.

Speaking of the West Wing, let's not forget Bradley Whitford, who's best two roles were the villian in Billy Madison, and Randy aka "Now all he is is a blind ass hole... what do you say to that, Chuckie?" in Scent of a Woman.

Speaking of Scent of a Woman, what ever happened to Gabrielle Anwar?

I completely disagree with Kevin Spacey- I think he's brilliant.

But absolutely, Denzel Washington. I do not enjoy him one bit.

As far as whoever asked who deserved an Oscar less than Paltrow for SIL? Well, Halle Berry comes to mind.

Sean Young (overrated due to the fact that she kept getting work)
Will Farrell
David Spade
Chris Farley (rest his soul)
Adam Sandler
Martin Short
Charlie Sheen
Christina Ricci (Wednesday Addams was the only decent work I've seen from her)

CM2 - I had the opportunity to see Al Pacino on stage and I completely understood why he his so highly regarded. The man has the most commanding presence I've ever witnessed.

I've enjoyed Denzel in everything I've seen him in EXCEPT Changing Lanes, for which I thought he was miscast and found him completely unconvincing.

I always think I won't like Paltow and then she always impresses me.

Ditto Jessica Lange. Frances was a tour-de-force.

Kidman won me over with To Die For.

I didn't realize Sean Young was getting alot of work...besides wearing a fake penis in Ace Ventura, or was it perhaps Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, which I believe won the Palme D'Or....

Alot of the actors mentioned in this thread aren't highly-regarded thespians, but actors who work alot.

Call me Ole Man Lildogs, but overrated to me implies that in either the press, the awards circuit or the acting community holds up a performer a being FAR more talented than he actually is. Spade, Farley, Sandler, Myers, Farrell, et al. are rarely listed in EW as our greatest leading men.

You can't be overrated if people don't think you're a good actor to begin with. AND I LOVE all those guys, but they're not in the same league as Morgan Freeman or Gene Hackman...and I doubt anyone puts them in that league.

Sean Young used to work a lot as a result of her performance in Blade Runner. That is what I could never understand. She was good in Blade Runner only because she played a robot devoid of emotion.

And all have been lauded by various press for their talent and are never out of work. I regard Myers as the most versatile and most talented of the bunch.

Overrated and overused are two very different things. And those men are certainly not without talent. They make alot of people laugh, which is a talent if there was one.

But do they make a lot of people laugh because they are actually talented or because the standards of comedy and the quality of SNL have plummeted? It's rare that I think of anyone from SNL in the last 10-15 years as "talented". I see them more as being "popular" simply because they were new and either ridiculous or rude. And it's rare that a new film or series comes along that actually makes me laugh. The guys I've mentioned have received numerous favorable reviews from critics and their films have a habit grossing well. When the public pays the ticket prices and the media offers the publicity to turn a one-trick pony into a national (and sometimes international) star, then I would consider them "overrated".

I'm with Touchme: Kevin Spacey, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Spacey.

No wonder he can't find a follow-up role to AMERICAN BEAUTY -- he wasn't that good in it. Everyone around him was better (start with the subtle, nuanced work of Chuck Cooper) in far, far more difficult roles. Go back and look at it again, as I did recently. Spacey's performance is basically one smug, prissy note. You could never believe he and Benning had ever been the happy couple. And no one notes -- he'd already played the part in the THE REF.

And I saw him on Broadway in both LOST IN YONKERS (much postering--Dreyfuss was better in the film) and ICEMAN, and again, everyone around him was more memorable.

But it's very subjective. And I've got weird taste that people yell at me about. (I can't bear to watch Hepburn in much of anything before LION IN WINTER. Yes, she was "one of a kind," but when she was young, all I see is the artifice and hamminess. Like Nina in SEAGULL, she didn't know what to do with her hands.)

Most of those guys haven't been in SNL in several YEARS. I can't explain why people laugh at anything. I think alot of things are funny that escape others and vice versa. I wish you found more comedies you enjoy. I don't seem to have a great deal of trouble finding a good one, either on television or film.
