KNOCKED UP, hands down.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

How is SWEENEY TODD overrated? It made like two bucks at the B.O.

I don't think that this discussion has anything to do with box office receipts, since several of the movies mentioned here (Atonement, Charlie Wilson's War, No Country for Old Men) are critical darlings that haven't exactly broken the bank. I chose Sweeney Todd as the most overrated film of 2007 not only because it is a film that received more positive than negative reviews (including being #3 or something like that on A.O. Scott's, the Times' chief film critic, top 10 list), but because on this board and ATC alone, it's been discussed ad nauseum for the past three months. "Countdown to Sweeney". "Who's seeing Sweeney opening night?" "Let's keep track of the amount of money we've all spent on the Sweeney movie!" "I passed a poster for Sweeney today!" (As far as overexposed discussion topics go, I think it's bested only my WICKED and RENT) The film is a bastardization, a directorial concept above all else and at the expense of the material, and reached its saturation point long before I ever stepped into the theatre to see it.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

No Country for Old Men gets my vote. I just got back from that a few hours ago and just do not get the hype AT ALL. And I've read the book and it's just wow...

And I'll echo previous sentiments wondering why there is little to no buzz about Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, which was my favorite film of the past year.

I'm with Cruel_Sandwich on this one. I know that Fox Searchlight specializes in those "quirky" somewhat Indie comedies, but Juno was just ridiculous. I know that this is this year's Little Miss Sunshine, but unlike Sunshine, this film is almost completely devoid of charm.

That screenplay made me cringe as well. Diablo Cody should go back to stripping.

this film is almost completely devoid of charm

Huh???
First of all, I think it's incredibly charming, actually charming is the only word I can use to describe the sweet last scene.
Second, the film is pretty candid and doesn't fall into any of the "charming" traps of other movies (think KNOCKED UP's absurd "charming" romance). I couldn't have loved this movie more, top-notch ensemble cast helmed by one of the best actresses working today. Loved every frame.

"SWEENEY was a good try, but there was no way it earned the fulsome accolades it got from almost every critic in the country. If it had been as good as everyone wanted it to be, (and a LOT funnier), we would have seen that reflected in the box office, at least temporarily (unless we want to blame "stupid, unsophisticated Middle America" for that.)"

It was the 5th highest grossing film in America the weekend it opened. It wasn't playing in alot of theaters anyway and now it's playing internationally. Besides, it didn't do so hot since it was up against National Treasure II, if it had opened with out any major competition, things probably would have been different.

Say what you want, but I thought it was one of the best movies of the year and it deserved the two Golden Globes and all the positive reviews. Maybe you just didn't care for it because you were expecting the stage show and not something completely different.

Loved Juno and the performances. I rented Hairspray and it just didn't keep my attention. Just seemed like the film lacked energy. Just sayin' mom

SWEENEY TODD... Hands down the most over-praised, over-hyped an overrated film of 2007

I gotta go with There Will Be Blood. At least in No Country the performances were flawless. Every one.

PEACE.

JUNO is miles ahead of LMS, and I really enjoyed LMS.

And I think I'll lend my vote to KNOCKED UP. I enjoyed it, but it isn't nearly as good as the hype.

Yankee- Didn't you claim in your review that Hairspray was the perfect movie musical?

Hairspray was good but overated. Sweeney was NOT. I liked knocked up. If you say Superbad was I'll get pissed. What WAS, No Country For Old Men.

So Cruel, did you finally get around to seeing JUNO, or are you just lying to us all again?

I did in fact see JUNO, and thought it was a sweet little film, but memorable mainly for the very high quality of the acting. Those songs really started to get on my nerves, adding a level of saccharine quirky cuteness that the film would have been better off without.

I don't think JUNO is as overrated as NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, though. NO COUNTRY is an entirely good movie, easily the Coens' best since RAISING ARIZONA, but the acclaim it has gotten is way way way out of proportion to what is actually on that screen.

I have a few questions for Juno lovers. I'm being dead serious here.

1. Did you enjoy Garden State?
2. Do you think Scrubs is a funny television program?
3. Do you think Jay Leno is funnier than David Letterman?
4. Do you prefer Mad TV to SNL?

By the way, what's with all the Knocked Up negativity? I thought I was going to hate that film. I couldn't stand The 40 Year Old Virgin and assumed that the man behind that charmless venture would be providing another Farrely Brothers-esque gross out comedy. I was shocked at how wildly entertaining the film turned out to be.

And as for No Country For Old Men, it would easily be the best film of '07 if it weren't for the astonishingly great There Will Be Blood. Updated On: 1/21/08 at 02:24 AM

I adore JUNO and I'll answer these.

1) Kinda. I thought it was okay, but it was overhyped and took itself too seriously.
2) I have seen one episode, and I didn't care much for it.
3) Absolutely not. I love Letterman to death.
4) Not in any way, shape or form.

SUPERBAD is DEFINITELY my pick. I went in hearing everyone raving about laughign through the whole thing and I think I laughed once, towards the end, at a bit that wasn't even supposed to be that funny. I found it to be lacking a LOT of things.
