"The Greatest Story Ever Told", on TCM right now, is in my opinion, the most beautifully photographed film ever made. Anyone else think so? Anyone ever see it?

There are some brilliant compositions (the scene where Christ and the disciples sit in the desert with the mountains behind them, for one) but, Lord almighty, it's like watching paint dry.

Well, it couldn't be more ponderous in tone; and I'm passing no judgement on its entertainment value; but it IS a gorgeous film. So much so, that I can watch it just for its sheer beauty. Every shot is composed like a painting. And I like the fact that George Stevens filmed the entire thing in the United States!

I remember seeing it on the big screen when it was first released in 70mm Cinerama. GORGEOUS. I absolutely fell in love with it. It doesn't translate as well to the small screen but it still reminds me of the beauty of the original. I'm particularly remembering the temptation of Christ (Donald Pleasance) and the raising of Lazarus as two particularly memorable scenes.

Are we talking visually beautiful or emotionally beautiful? Either way, here's my list:

Amelie (which falls under both categories)
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (also both)
The Ice Storm (both again)
Moulin Rouge
Chicago
Road To Perdition
Beauty and the Beast (both Cocteau's and Disney's versions)
Phantom of the Opera

Luhrmann and Zeffirelli's versions of Romeo and Juliet are both exceedingly pretty films.

Luhrmann's R&J
Most Tim Burton stuff
2004 POTO (love it or hate it, it's BEAUTIFUL)

I also really like the cinematography of M. Night Shymalan.

From what I've seen of Phantom, it is a truely visually stunning film.

I'm glad you mentioned Cinema Paradiso, Corine, that is an amazing film.

And broadway86, AI is also a great film re: Most beautiful film ever made.

Personally, I think the most beautiful movies are the ones that make me cry
So bascially anything about war
Saving Private Ryan made me cry for 2 straight hours
Black Hawk Down killed me
and The Patriot was a real tear-jerker for me...

oh and Little Women

I thought this was about beautifully shot films- visual prettiness rather than any other form of measurement.

I think The Hours was beautifully made but in a totally different light than movies like POTO and Gone With The Wind. It was hauntingly beautiful.

For sheer visual sumptuousness, Visconti's Death in Venice is hard to beat.
