Sorry to bump from my own post...but Urban Dictionary - the pinnacle of all things we discuss here - says I'm right.
Suck it, it's Bourgie!

i hate that we're debating a ghetto term and using it like it's part of the American lexicon!
it's either bourgeois or bourgeoisie.

For the sake of completeness, I would like to point out that Urbandictionary also has it as "booji"

No one had to sabotage the book.
I'm sure she's got some anger, but writing a tell-all book about something that wasn't all that interesting when it was actually happening (and I say that as someone who was living in New Jersey at the time) and expecting it to be revenge or the silver lining, or whatever, is more than a little delusional.
Sometimes circumstances deliver an unfair blow to the life somewhat thought s/he was living. In which case it is far classier to suck it up and try to reshape what's left into something new or even better. Now she not only has a stinker of a book, she has also lost any sympathy she might have had by having to find someone to blame. That's never an appealing trait.
Sh*t happens. Time to move on.
(On the other hand, the money from the book sales might have come in handy...I'm guessing the little McG children have decades of therapy ahead of them.)

What Oprah appearances reveal, often, is the real author. Ms. McGreevey was pitifully inarticulate, unable to embellish or provide nuanced answers when pressed. Winfrey gave her an entire hour -- a big mistake. Clearly this tome was written by a ghost who took at best a magazine article premise and bloated it, shamefully, by offering details of a couple no one is curious about.
What continues to offend is the "coming out" aspect of this lurid debacle. McGreevey never came out -- he was forced to reveal his affair under threat of blackmail. He had hired an inappropriate man for the wrong job, and then had sexual relations with him. It's corruption 101. Yet he spun it to suggest the morning after a dark night of the soul, a PC revelation slash confession -- hence, the ludicrous "I am a Gay American" announcement.
The man left office in shame, not because he was gay, but because he was shady, a liar, and (painful to say, as a Democrat) a shallow mediocrity whose ambitions and narcissism trumped his loyalty to the state or the position to which he was elected.
McGreevey was remorseful like a ten year old -- because he got caught. If he could've sustained the duplicity and remained Governor, he would have.
It's despicable to have entire fall from grace wrapped up in gay identity politics. Had his sexual orientation been the overriding issue, he should've (and would likely have) stayed in office as a gay -- divorced but dedicated -- governor. He was a sneaky bastard whose lies and coverup caught up with him. He doesn't belong on gay pride parade floats, and his ex-wife shouldn't be counseling women or men.

Except that's the problem with gay identity politics. Say you're gay and you end up on a float tossing Mardi Gras beads, preferrably while pumping your pecs.
That's why I always get a chuckle when people say "We shouldn't criticize one of our own, we should fight our REAL enemies." Well, I don't actually want to be in any group of "our own" if Jim McGreevy's in it. As Armistead Maupin wrote in an essay a couple of decades ago: "All gay men are NOT my brothers!" It was very liberating to read that.

I have a good friend who didn't speak to me for a month after the McGreevey debacle for just the reasons Namo mentions. He'd say "well, now everyone can say they know of a famous gay person!" as if that made the Jimbo shame-based exit from the Gov. Mansion a positive. He insisted it was, saying "anyone famous who reveals himself to be gay" is a positive, because it shows that gays are in "high places." A friend of his who is more of bonafide activist had written something to that effect and touted the moment as a telling chapter in gay history. I was appalled. It seemed very pre Stonewall, pre Mattachine (sp?) Society, pre Lavender Scare, pre Oscare effing Wilde, to suggest that any old "celebrity" revealed as a c--ks--r would help "the cause." No movement need be defined only by the saints -- a few sinners are nice to have a round and usually more fun. But hypocrites and crooks and self-serving politico narcissists do not create anything but a nasty backlash.
And I could respect him more if he said "you know what, the rest stops were a part of my experience, and I miss the rest stops." His sanctimonious "I am now a MONOGAMOUS gay America" crap offends me as much as his behavior as Gov. Spare me.
The bottom line: In NJ McGreevy is never mentioned without snickers or head shaking. I hope he lives a contented life, and makes peace with his ex enough to raise his daughter with digity. But as a role model for anything -- especially coming out -- he has no value.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 9:57amAmen, Auggie. I would love to ask McSkeevey if, since he feels SO FREE now that he has "come out", if he would support outing other politicians.

I totally agree, Auggie.
According to the attached article from today's USA Today, the real reason her book failed is that Jim accuses her of having bad taste in clothes!!
