Just finished watching this...Woah. Wierd movie. Especially since I was a Lynch virgin. The performances were excellent though, and it was entertaining to watch. I've been surfing some sites that have theories about the plot and whatnot, but I just get more and more confused. Maybe I need to watch it a second time.
Suggestions? Thoughts?
It was a very painful film for me to watch, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Have you read this dissection of the movie yet?

I HATED, HATED that movie! "Silencio", indeed. OY! Even Ann Miller couldn't save it. It was a failed TV pilot for ABC and after sitting through it, I can see why it failed. Dreadful mumbo jumbo.
Silencio, jimnysf!
In my opinion, it's a masterpiece! But then again, I'm a big David Lynch fan. Have you checked out this site? It's the most exhaustive and comprehensive analysis that I've come across. If you take the time to read through it, it really helps to sort it all out.

I've been a Lynch fan since Eraserhead (his best, IMO). Mullholland Drive, though was hard to figure out because it was meant to be a series and they had to pull the plot together. Even though I still don't understand it, I enjoy watching all his films.
Luscious, I think blue is your color!

I prefer his "Lost Highway" but as a Lynch fan through and through I like this one as well. Though I found it a bit difficult to understand the first time.
A gorgeous, absurdist masterpiece, with Naomi Watts giving an Oscar-worthy performance. Just splendid.

LOL! And if her performance in this mess is "Oscar-worthy", then so is Bruce Jenner's in "Can't Stop The Music"!
I like Lynch too, but this was garbage.
Like Season Two of "Twin Peaks."

i love david lynch (especially FIRE WALK WITH ME...& i hated LOST HIGHWAY)
I dont know if i would say i "loved" MULLHOLLAND DRIVE, but i would say that i identified with it in the most painful way.
One of my favorites. And remember, Lynch was nominated for an Oscar for this. I can't wait for Inland Empire.
I love this movie. It turned me into a huge Naomi Watts fan after watching it.

It's true when they say one person's trash is another person's treasure. I still hated it.
Rex Reed wasn't fond of it either.
"Like most film conventions, Toronto has its highs and lows. The low point is Mulholland Drive, a moronic and incoherent piece of garbage by David Lynch that was shot as a TV pilot and rejected. Not good enough for television, but lapped up as a centerpiece for the forthcoming New York Film Festival. Has everyone gone mad? Incomprehensible gibberish is no longer a good excuse for titillation, even at Lincoln Center. Fortunately, there is enough good stuff to sweeten the taste of bile peddled by hawkers of pretentious rubbish like Mulholland Drive."
It does seem to divide people.
" I still hated it"
You have made this clear three times. We got it!

And I agree with Rex Reed. It is "garbage".
Hon, you don't need Rex Reed to validate your opinion-relax. you didn't like it, others did. It's all going to be ok!

Jane2 Sweetie, I'm glad it's all going to be OK but you must get over your need to answer every time I do about this film or I will have to answer back to say, once again, it was an awful film. I know that some enjoyed it but that's OK. That's why there is more than one flavor of ice cream. Perhaps one day they will all agree with the esteemed critic Rex Reed and Jimnysf
This quote from reel.com sums it up:
"...will likely split audiences and reviewers into two vocal factions: those who think it's challenging surreal cinema and those who consider it to be self-indulgent, artsy-fartsy hooey."
You're dying to say it was awful again, so here's your chance-get it out, get it all out!

Wow! I am glad you finally had a breakthrough and now agree that it was awful. I am still concerned with your obsession to answer every time because it fuels my obsession of having to reply.
Don't concern yourself with my posts here-I'm sure you can find things more important! Gotta go to work~

I miss you already. Have a good night at work.
Definitely not for all tastes, but I think it's brilliant filmmaking. Brilliant. The best of 2001. And, believe it or not, it all makes perfect sense. However, it only makes sense if you're willing to watch it a couple of times. Once you have it all figured out, watch it again, and see how all of the clues and nuances in the performances/writing/direction add up.
And Naomi Watts is Oscar-worthy in a multilayered performance.

I, too, adored this movie -- but these sub-reality-type movies are the ones I usually enjoy, anyway. I love that it has basically the same message as another of my all-time favorites, which also bears the name of a certain famous Hollywood thoroughfare (and I'm guessing that's not an accident). And I think that guy behind the dumpster at the beginning rides with me on the subway every morning.
Exactly, broadway86; it DOES all add up and make sense. As does Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and most of Lynch's other films once you've been given all of the pieces to the puzzle. I guess that's why Lost Highway is my least favorite of his work. Although I admire much about it, it really doesn't add up for me. You have to be willing to go with the whole concept of transmigration of the soul for it to make any real sense; where as with Mulholland Drive, all of the pieces fit perfectly once you get it. But you definitely have to be willing to analyze it and watch it more than once to fully appreciate its brilliance. As with all of Lynch’s films, it’s not for someone with an MTV attention span.
