And Paterson will become the first African American governor of New York and the fourth African American governor in US history.
Will he support Hillary or Barack? So far he has been a Hillary supporter, but we live in exciting times.

Posted: 3/10/08 at 5:51pmWe don't know the whole story. Spitzer should not resign until some of the dust settles. He's our best bet for same sex marriages in NYS.

Pardon me if I do not shed a tear for Mr Spitzer
My wife used to be in the liquor industry & Mr Goody Too Shoes almost destroyed it with his high handed methods. Mr Clean turns out to have a few skeletons in his closet.
He previously wanted to tak drug dealers & hookers. Is this his payback. Mrs R should get a good chuckle out of this along with many others whose lives have been destroyed by Elliot the all american boy.

I won't deny he did something stupid but how is what he did worse than what David Vitter and Larry Craig did? They didn't resign.

how was it kept secret? it was a sealed indictment.
and it was not the first time for spitzy nor did he plan for it to be the last:
page 27 of the indictment (page 34 of the pdf) - client 9, "yup same as in the past, no question about it."
he also gave the girl extra so his deposit for next time would be taken care of.
oh it's good stuff.

Democrats are supposed to be squeaky clean . This is the way they portray themselves.
All politicians are sleazy - SOme less than others & those like Spitzer who are supposed to be ethical generally are the sleaziest.
Mr Bulldozer seems to be in a little doo doo. Could not happen to a nicer guy.

He should resign, no doubt about it. But why the caveat? Are Senators held to lesser standards?

craig should have resigned months ago.
vitter's happened when he was in the house, years before. had it come out when it happened, i would have suggested he resign.

Posted: 3/10/08 at 6:56pmSo what your saying is there are 2 sets of rules. If Spitzer had a (R) after his name it would have a totally different spin. I'm not defending Spitzer. I'm just saying how someone like Rush would NEED to know their political party before he commented on this story. The Lt.Governor sounds like a nice guy. I think Spitzer should step down and end this ASAP. I just wanted to hear what those who stuck for the other 2 Republicans had to say. By the way is a Governor suppose to hold a higher moral ground than a US Senator? Pardon me, but that was the weakest attempt of a defense I have ever heard.

Posted: 3/10/08 at 7:11pmThe problem is that he portrays himself as Mr Squeaky Clean, and he isn't. He's shut down prostitution rings, yet here he is patronising them. If he hadn't done these things in the past he wouldn't be seen as so hypocritical now.

No one who commits a crime think they will get caught
This is not just soliciting a prostitute but getting caught in a Federal Probe of of a prostitution ring.

blank me running, but i think romatico and i agree: spitzy's achilles is his arrogance. it always has been. i mean the whole "i'm a steamroller" thing?
but i feel bad for his family. they're going to go through hell and have done nothing to deserve it. three kids. christ.

Roxy - you are so full of crap with regarding "Democrats are supposed to be squeaky clean" line.
And Vitter's conduct occurred while he was an elected official. He just was not as a juicy of a figure to go after.
And, this is one where I also agree with Papa and Romatico - the arrogance of Spitzer and his holier-than-thou attitude created enemies and those looking for his fall from grace.

Posted: 3/10/08 at 8:11pmPapa, I could not have said it better myself. Time Magazine put him on the cover a few years back and called hi the new Elliot Ness. If he were smart he'd resign and let this story go away fast. It would be the best thing for NY,The Democratic Party, and his family.

It looks like some of the financial institutions he went after may have been the source of his undoing...
"The federal investigation of a New York prostitution ring was triggered by Gov. Eliot Spitzer's suspicious money transfers, initially leading agents to believe Spitzer was hiding bribes, according to federal officials.
It was only months later that the IRS and the FBI determined that Spitzer wasn't hiding bribes but payments to a company called QAT, what prosecutors say is a prostitution operation operating under the name of the Emperors Club.
...
The suspicious financial activity was initially reported by a bank to the IRS which, under direction from the Justice Department, brought kin the FBI's Public Corruption Squad.
"We had no interest at all in the prostitution ring until the thing with Spitzer led us to learn about it," said one Justice Department official."
Sounds like his bank had him under very close scrutiny. It sounds like a bit of payback here...
