Yes it is bad for you but the Nanny state mentality is getting out of control
Lets ban cars & buses because of toxic fumes. While we are at it lets ban all fast food . Than we can start prohibition again by banning liquor because it can be the cause of deaths from drunk driving

while I think this is a great idea, i'm not sure if it is right and fair legally.
I do think restaurants should be forced to post on the menu if they do use trans fats. people should be allowed to at least be able to decide what they eat. and this is one reason why I hate eating out--you never know what they are putting in their food. I would actually like nutrition labels for every meal if that was even possible.

"while I think this is a great idea, i'm not sure if it is right and fair legally."
Hah, well Chicago banned foie gras...so it would probably be legal to ban trans fats.

Posted: 9/27/06 at 8:27pmIt's nice that everyone's worried about nutrition now, but it's not and should not be the government's job or right to tell me what I should and should not eat.

Posted: 9/27/06 at 8:31pmbut those two issues are not synonymous. one is about cruelty to animals and the other is about whether or not people should have the right to control what they put in their bodies/should something dangerous be allowed to be served ala the kinds of decisions the fda would make.

Posted: 9/27/06 at 8:35pmbut the gov does make decisions of this nature: asbestos, lead paint, drugs, etc. and sets guidelines for the food industry.

It's a scary line of what the government should and shouldn't do. Who can detirmine what the government's role in our lives should be? Do we have a strict or a loose interpretation of the constitution? Etc.
I probably just defeated the purpose of my first post, but this can start a really interesting debate.

No one's going to tell me what I should eat but I have the right to know what the H*** they're putting in the food. The restaurants have a right to serve what they want and we have a right to know what it is! Especially with so many food allergies abounding~

I'm already a finicky eater as it is and this discussion is making me have serious reservations about eating in a restaurant ever again.

Posted: 9/27/06 at 11:11pmThis is another example of how the Baby Boom generation tries to control everything. In the 1960s, they smoked it up, sexed it up, drank it up, ate it up, messed it up. Now they get all sanctimonious and tell everyone how to live. They are the same people that turned New York City from an exciting place into a dull, lifeless suburb. I say we ban Baby Boomers.

Banned by the government seems a bit extreme. But I wouldn't mind knowing if there are trans fats in something I'm considering ordering, as I try not to eat them. But that's my choice. If someone wants to eat them, be my guest. Informed consent, y'know?

Posted: 9/28/06 at 12:09pmAs I said in the other thread about this, I would be all for it if they banned it on a federal level, and the manufacturers of margarine, shortening and such had to stop using it. But for now, it's a legal poison, so doing it at this level is going to hurt the wrong people.
