Does anyone play? These new rules are ridiculous.
"On Tuesday, toy and game company Mattel announced plans to release a new version of the popular word game in Britain. That version, to be unveiled in the next few months, will allow celebrity names and other proper nouns to garner points. "

But isn't the whole point of Scrabble that you CAN'T use proper nouns?

It's all a big lie. Scrabble is launching a new game called "Scrabble Trickster" where you can use names and all sorts of other stuff...Scrabble itself is unchanged.

Right, it's just an alternative version of the game, like the kiddie version of Clue in which you try to figure out who ate a cake instead of who bashed Mr. Boddy's head in with a blunt object.
"...you try to figure out who ate a cake..."
The answer to that riddle is usually: me.
Seriously, though, do you really need a whole other version of the game to let that rule change take effect? Couldn't you just sit down with the standard board and say, "Hey guys, tonight when we play, 'Mike Judge' and 'Tom Cruise'" are acceptable. As are zrbtt, cromulent and melmac." And then you play. No new board necessary. Savings to you: $24.99.
(yes, I picked those two celebrities for a reason!)
Next: the Will & Grace edition of Scrabble, where 'spramp' is acceptable, available for $29.99.

have you guys played scrabble slam? my friends and i played it.. man did we suck!!! if you haven't heard of it... it's scrabble using playing cards and you just got to be fast and get rid of your cards... you can only make four letter words and you just keep putting cards over each other to make the words... we were so bad at it to the point it was funny! haha

lol. yep, that's what we do for Scattergories. it still ends up with one couple leaving and fighting "that is so a word, place" or what have you and not talking. i have seen serious fights in that game.

We like to sometimes play "ghetto scrabble." As long as your word is spelled phonetically, and you can use it in a sentence, it's allowed. Some of the crazy phonetic slang we come up with amazes me to no end.

Even if they changed the rules on Scrabble it's not like you can't always play House Rules anyway.
Cromulent - and embiggens -- and kwyjibo, right?
Why change it? Half the fun is arguing over the whether the word is valid or not.

embiggens!! haha... awesome... love that line... a noble spirit embiggens the smallest man!!
I forgot about kywjibo! And that one would have been far more appropriate for this thread.
