Yup. Seems too nice for the leader of an organization responsible for the deaths of millions of Africans from AIDS, the subjugation and humiliation of women, the abuse of thousands of children, support for the Nazis, the attack on US citizens' right to access universal healthcare, the hoarding of BILLIONS of dollars in profits, the degradation and isolation of gay men and women, the canonization and international celebrity of Mother Teresa - a woman who let AIDS patients die excruciating deaths without any medical care so that it would bring them closer to Jesus, protected her pedophiliac priest friends and squandered millions of unaccounted dollars given to her order.
But, you know, cool new Pope isn't so "judgy", so he gets a pass.

The chair is devoid of opulence. Good. A folding chair would have been better, but this one is okay as long as they didn't spend more than $50 on it.

Because progress is never enough for some people. We can't just have a better pope, we have to have a pope that denounces Catholicism for good and admits that the Catholic Church is responsible for every single evil deed in the modern era and that Catholics should be held responsible for the actions of some people in their faith.

And yeah, if I met the pope in real life, I would probably not be in agreement with many of his social philosophies, but like I said, progress. Would you prefer Benedict? And he does more good than harm, especially in comparison to other popes.

Sorry, kid you don't get a pass on this one. We get it. You're a nice person. The people in your particular school and church are nice people. We get that. Catholics can be good. Good people can be Catholic. No reasonable person would deny that. This is not about your belief in Christ or about Christianity in general, but about the very particular and specific human rights abuses of your church. And, no, the Catholic church is not the only religious organization to have committed human rights abuses, but it's the only one in which its leader is an actual head of state and who political leaders the world over are forced to show deference to.
American catholics (who are leaving the church in droves, BTW) may choose to be "cafeteria Catholics" following the doctrine of the church that aligns with their lifestyles and ignoring the less progressive elements of the church. That's fine, but it in no way excuses the centuries of abuses and malfeasance this awful institution is responsible for. The rather lax approach to catholicism by American followers does not in anyway excuse the crimes of the church itself and by continuing to pour millions of dollars into the coffers of this evil, corrupt organization, ANY and EVERY practicing Catholic is contributing the perpetuation of these crimes against women, abused children and gays & lesbians.
I will not bow down to this man - he's just a ****ing man, BTW - simply because he's a little less medieval than his predecessors. It is insane. INSANE that the leader of your church is considered a head of state. This idolatry of a single man who supposedly has a hotline to Jesus is just ridiculous. Can you imagine if we gave this kind of reception to a chief muslim cleric or a leading Rabbi? Of course not. It's unthinkable. Practice and believe what you want, but keep it and your obsessions with oppression to yourselves.

Okay, I don't have nearly enough energy to argue with people on the internet, but as for your head of state comment, the church owns Vatican City. The Vatican is a country lead by the Pope, with its own system of election and its own status as a legal state. The fact that he is also a religious leader is separate. Why don't you try educating yourself?
