I JUST got back to jrb's apartment after a very long day at the theatre.
The gods were obviously smiling on me as I was the first name called at the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels lottery. I went to Pigalle's for lunch and Norbert was in there with (I assume) his parents. Anyway, on to the show. It's total fun. A hoot. A riot. It belongs to Norbert though. He's just incredible. John Lithgow is great too, but it's nothing we haven't seen from him before. Joanna Gleason was sublime but I don't quite see the point of her character. Sherie Rene Scott was glorious. The opening scene made me think I was in for a long afternoon, but it picked up massively with the appearance of Mr Butz. He's just fantastic.
Then the gods continued to smile on me as I went to try and get a return to Hurlyburly. The box office were rather unhelpful (apparently they don't get cancellations, whatever that might mean), but I waited around and a very nice lady sold me her spare ticket for $5 off. Well, I have not seen such a committed cast give such intense performances in such a well directed and well staged production of such an overlong, overwritten and unlikeable play. There was not one weak link on the stage. But it wasn't what I would call a fun evening.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
