Newt Gingrich as the voice of reason?

His letter to the RNC:
I was saddened to learn that at a time of national trial, when a president-elect is preparing to take office in the midst of the worst financial crisis in over seventy years, that the Republican National Committee is engaged in the sort of negative, attack politics that the voters rejected in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.
The recent web advertisement, “Questions Remain,” is a destructive distraction. Clearly, we should insist that all taped communications regarding the Senate seat should be made public. However, that should be a matter of public policy, not an excuse for political attack.
In a time when America is facing real challenges, Republicans should be working to help the incoming President succeed in meeting them, regardless of his Party.
From now until the inaugural, Republicans should be offering to help the President-elect prepare to take office.
Furthermore, once President Obama takes office, Republicans should be eager to work with him when he is right, and, when he is wrong, offer a better solution, instead of just opposing him.
This is the only way the Republican Party will become known as the “better solutions” party, not just an opposition party. And this is the only way Republicans will ever regain the trust of the voters to return to the majority.
This ad is a terrible signal to be sending about both the goals of the Republican Party in the midst of the nation’s troubled economic times and about whether we have actually learned anything from the defeats of 2006 and 2008.
The RNC should pull the ad down immediately.

despise his ideas and hate his hypocrisy, but the reason newt managed the republican revolution was because he did have ideas. a commodity in which the gop is sorely lacking these days. he's right. unless the gop starts to offer alternatives - and not just the same warmed over retreads that get whipped out every 2 years - they are looking at quite a long time in the wilderness. which is not necessarily a bad thing for the party as it is wildly uncertain about what it is and what it stands for these days...other than being against everything the democrats do. democrats ran on that in '04 thinking that all they had to do was oppose bush and that bush hatred would sweep them into office. it didn't work then and it won't work now.
people want to know what you are for, not what you're against. hell obama won by being for the nebulous goal of "change". the gop is far too full of reactionaries right now. what it needs are a few visionaries. but then, who knows what the landscape will look like in 2 years? long-term though the gop needs some big ideas or it will be renamed the filibuster party.

Posted: 12/16/08 at 1:50pmI think what's truly bizarre is that they are still trying to drum up suspicions and cast aspersions at a guy who hasn't even taken office yet, and is still carrying the overwhelming good will of the people. ESPECIALLY when their guy is so unpopular people are throwing shoes at him. The Republican party has an opening right now to start changing its tune, and they aren't taking it. Oh well.

Posted: 12/16/08 at 3:29pmAt this point in time the Republican Party does not know its ass from a hole in the ground and are just throwing things out there and seeing if they stick. They have no leader and McCain has already rebuked them about the same thing on Sunday and now Newt has followed his lead.

The question must be why Newt is taking the high road all of a sudden. What's he up to? And how much is he getting paid?
The last thing anyone should ever do is trust a Republican politician.

The words are all well and good and the thoughts are well presented in his letter, but Mr. Gingrich has never NOT had an agenda of his own.
Beware.
