Much has happened in the dense and shifting political landscape of the past 18 months—the quick breakdown along partisan lines in Congress; continuing arguments over spending, the economy and immigration; the big Republican wins in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts; the Gulf oil spill; falling poll numbers for the president and his party.
But the biggest political moment, the one that carried the deepest implications, came exactly one year ago, in July and August of 2009, in the town hall rebellion. Looking back, that was a turning point in both parties' fortunes. That is when the first resistance to Washington's plans on health care became manifest, and it's when a more generalized resistance rose and spread.

Posted: 7/11/10 at 10:08amCount, why are the "Big Republican wins" in off-year elections so important when the "Huge Democratic wins" in 2008 are ignored? Why are the folks who stand by the side of the road holding signs like "we came unarmed...this time!" a better barometer of the mood of the country than the actual vote totals in an actual election? Why when a Republican president wins by 3% (or loses by a fraction of a point) is he seen to have a clear mandate but a Democrat who wins by 7% (and more than 10,000,000 popular votes) has no valid claim to the office? How do you propose we elect out leaders if not by election and "majority rules"?

While I understand your questions, I do not understand their relationship to Ms. Noonan's great column.
The democrats did get a mandate in '08. What have they done with it?
If the Republicans win this year, it will be HUGE because it change everything about things work in Washington.

Obama's recess appoinment of John Berwick proves that Obamacare will result in health care rationing.
He has a love affair with Britains National Health System .He is on record that a fair health care system redistributes wealth. This flies in the face of Obama saying there will be no rationing & lower health care costs.Mr Berwick is an advocate of rationing health care. I guess this is why my wife has been told next years rates will be much higher for her plan.
Why, if it is so great, will it not go into effect fully until 2014? Could it be that Obama would not have to run for reelection than? What a coincidence.
If Republicans get control of either chamber but continue to spend & spend they will lose again in 2012.

Brilliantly served. Sadly true.

Peggy Noonan was really just addressing the political deficit for the dems at the moment.

Not for Roxy. He and his wife get their health care. His position is not unique, and I get that there is fear that there is only so much to go around.
My view is that so many are busy protecting what they have, they do not realize that by failing to do nothing, they are compromising the very benefits they cling to.
Personally, I do OK. I have had the benefit of a quality public education, and an infrastructure that allowed my parents to give their children a better life. That infrastructure is under attack, and between the shrinking middle class and the attack on quality public eduction (from a variety of factors you can blame both right and left for the current situation), the path to a better life is being closed. From my selfish perspective, the lack of opportunities within the system compromises the livelihood of the system.
From my perspective nothing provides stability like inherent opportunity. Many do not see it that way - they see opportunity for others as necessarily costing them something. Some of us think the pie can get bigger.
There is very little "we" today, and a whole lot of "me". I personally think we need a better balance to be a functioning society.

Obama's recess appoinment of John Berwick proves that Obamacare will result in health care rationing.
I know this question will be for naught.
But, Roxy can you please explain to those of us who are less enlightened than you, how health care in this country is NOT already rationed?

With the obvious admissions that the Obama Health Care plan is (at its core) rationing, I wonder if everyone here supports this rationing?
Today, no senior citizens are refused care they might need because they are too old.

CountA it's rather bizarre that you'd post a column and call it "great" when you aren't able to recognize it's central thesis.
Noonan is bubbling over with gravitas that three elections in a off year signify a Republican tide- all the while dismissing the actual Democratic mandate scored in 2008. So I ask: What makes those three election victories so significant and the 2008 election insignificant.
Republicans will probably gain seats this year but will not score a majority in either chamber. It's telling that Noonan (w2ho has no function other than right-wing propagandist) wrote this column now, when Tea Party influence and membership is disappearing faster than the guacamole at a Rush Limbaugh cocktail party. Did you see all the coverage for the Tea Parties July 4th rallies? It looked like both Tea Baggers were still quite enthused.

You TRY to disparage with the term "tea-baggers" but you miss the essential points: Democrats are struggling at the moment. It is not a good time to be a democrat.
Are you saying that if Republicans gain a few seats, that Obama will be able to get more of his agenda passed?

And less than two years ago it was an EXCELLENT Time to be a Democrat. Things change. Pendulums swing. Someday, people will fall for Republican hokum again and they will be in charge. Will that time be 2012? No. 2014? Probably not.
The fact that Peggy Noonan gets paid to write such pointless tripe is a testimony to conservatives eagerness to be told what they want to hear.

So, you "claim" she has embarrassed "Our" party (as if you really think people here believe you are a liberal HD) You also "claim" you voted for Obama. You even put down Rachel Maddow.
Well CountA, you have never denounced any Republican since you have been here. Only liberals(like Joy Behar) Obama and now this liberal. Where is your outrage over Mark Williams? Why are you not bumping that thread? Or why are you so silent about the Republican Hypocrisy Thread? You are quiet regarding the David Vitter Thread. So, you are a liberal who has no complaints about the GOP only the Democrats? LOL! CountA you are not even a convincing Liar(like most Republicans)
You don't matter. We all know you are full of BS and you can not even debate fairly or intelligently. You are forced to use right wing blogs and editorial sites to back up what ever argument you think you have and then you cry victory in your 5 year old brain thinking you are the smartest guy in the room.Lets see what name you post under come November and we can then gloat. You are a coward who can't even admit you are a GOP Troll.
