Sorry to hear this but careful what you read. Googling "cancer" rarely comes up with initial stories that make you feel hopeful. A lot of us have found that out.
You just have to take it step by step and day by day. Positive turns of events often happen only after moments of despair.
Wishing you strength.

What PJ said about googling "cancer".
And to add to that I would like to let you know that there are a lot of people who make it through cancer and live long long lives in healthy remission.

Nothing but good thoughts and prayers for you and yours, Mister Matt.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson

Matt, sending you hugs...stay strong so your dad can too. Adding to the advice not to google too much, but it's hard not to, I know.

Thanks so much, everyone. Many of you already know my Dad is my hero, so this is a real punch in the gut. Not that I wouldn't be devastated if it were any other loved one, but you know what I mean. The man sidestepped death more than once and has lived with a pacemaker for almost 40 years, had bypass surgery and a valve replacement. So esophageal cancer is a total blindside.
The more encouraging statements I get from people, the easier it is to deal with the news. Every little bit is invaluable to me and greatly appreciated. Even the magic candles. Hey, everyone believes in all sorts of crazy stuff whether it is religion, rumor or superstition, especially around here. Raise your hand if you wet yourself or go ballistic when someone says "Macbeth" in a theatre. So bring on the magic candles, incense, gongs, chanting, smudge sticks, rabbit feet, Lucky Charms, Wonka Bars, and anything thing you can think of. If it is rooted in love, support, friendship and/or good will, my family and I will take anything we can get. It's all deeply appreciated.
Namo - I will try hard to represent, but what can I say? I'm such a rebel.

Mister Matt. So sorry for your sad news. I wish you all the chance to find smiles during this very difficult time. You'll be in my thoughts.

Just a brief update. I haven't been around the boards much because my spirits haven't been very high. Dad had a very rough ride with chemo (which burned off layers of his skin) and radiation. Recently, he had major complications from a reaction to the chemo and his lungs are failing. He's been sedated on a ventilator in ICU for three weeks now and also has a mysterious infection the doctors have been unsuccessful in treating or diagnosing. With the lack of nutrition from a feeding tube due to the endless tests trying to diagnose his illness and the potentially permanent damage to his lungs, he will miss the window of opportunity for his esophagus/stomach surgery and his chances of survival are slim. The next week will be the most telling. Either way, the doctors believe it will be a long ordeal. My brother is coming back up from Austin so we can discuss everything with my mother and help her make some key decisions. My partner and I canceled our annual trip to NYC so I could take over some shifts staying in ICU with my dad and I know he feels terrible having to return to Spain this Sunday before we have any real idea of a resolution yet. The next few weeks are going to be so hard.
