Okay. This is just getting absurd. A state-sponsored film is trying to rewrite history and claim Tchaikovsky was not gay. First off, it's well known that is a lie. Second, who cares what his sexuality is? Russia does, clearly.

From Arts Journal:

"Yuri Arabov, a veteran Russian screenwriter, has just finished work on a biopic of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Journalists were eager to know how this state-sponsored film would handle the delicate subject of the composer’s sexual attachments at a time when Russian law prohibits the promotion of homosexuality. Arabov replied: ‘It is absolutely not the case that Tchaikovsky was homosexual… I am opposed to the discussion of such themes, particularly in the arts.’.

President Putin will be pleased."

How is this different from photos being doctored under the regime of Stalin, erasing the evidence of people who had been disappeared?

Kad, this lie and attempt at rewriting history isn't a huge deal compared to what the toilet bowl of Europe has done before. But when you throw it in with every other homophobic action the country has taken recently, it becomes comically pathetic.

Not surprising. Many of the Romanov relations - Alexandra's brother, Dmitri Pavlovich, Felix Yussupov, the children's English teacher - were openly homosexual, and as far as society would allow Nicholas and Alexandra were quite all right with it. Except I don't think Putin would like to talk about that.

This "war on homosexuality" is religiously motivated. The moral conservatives (always religiously bent) are calling the shots. And for a country, or rather union of countries, who banned most organized religions for decades, this strikes me as a whiplash turnaround in everything they stand for.

This can't end well, and I'm sure it won't.
