But as Obamacare begins to kick in, artists, photographers, writers, and other members of the “creative class” who have access to health insurance programs through numerous professional organizations will lose that coverage.

Another point that this article hints at is that unions will lose their power. If you belong to Equity, but healthcare is run through the government, that's one less issue that unions have to leverage their power.

That's sad to see that those groups are going to lose the ability to offer top level coverage.

What I will say is that, as a creative professional who doesn't meet the standards to join most of the organizations, the insurance exchange aspect of the ACA means that I'll be able to find a plan I can afford. I'd still like to join these relevant groups because of the status they offer and networking opportunities, but insurance was never why I'd apply. The discounted or free legal counsel is the real draw.

I've been uninsured for years, relying on urgent cares when I'd get really sick in the middle of a show I was vocal directing and hoping I had enough money to cover the meds on my own. The only plan I have access to now is a terrible plan through a substitute teaching firm that offers a whopping 5 doctors visits a year and $200 in emergency room care. I'll have more options when everything starts to kick in next month.

Even if Obamacare was a total success, it would still leave 30 million people without health care. Not quite "universal"

My doctors say from what they have seen of it a disaster looms. I believe they should know as they will deal with it first hand. In all fairness all Obama did was sign it. The Rube Goldberg mechanisms were left to other at his behest. He just wanted the photo op & an achievement with his name on it.

Those touting single payer should go overseas where almost 1/2 of a persons income is taken to pay for the "free" health care.

If it is so good have all NYC government workers go on it. Than I will believe it is good. They know better

Roxy...of course it's not universal healthcare. Are you a fan of a single payer system now? That's what the country needs.
There are a ton of problems with the Affordable Care Act. People will lose coverage. It's going to be disastrous for non profit hospitals in urban areas. But overall more people will have access to healthcare.
Hopefully it's a step on the way to a single payer system.

My wifes cobra expires mid September . In trying to get a health plan she was quoted a price of$ 1600 per month. She can not check Obamacare with insurance brokers because they have been told nothing & she was told to call back 10/1 & maybe they might have an answer.

There are better & less costly ways to do healthcare with as little government "help" as possible.

All I am saying as government involvement here is way over the top.This could have been done with much less government intrusion, less red tape & at much less expense if they took the time to do it right instead of rushing to do this.Many who voted for it had no idea what was in it.

Many doctors are retiring rather than getting involved with this. To much work for less of a reimbursement. Less doctors & more patients is a formula for disaster.
