Those touting single payer should go overseas where almost 1/2 of a persons income is taken to pay for the "free" health care.
There is currently no country that has a workable universal healthcare plan. There is no workable model. That's just blatantly ignorant. Sweden is an absolutely workable model. Yep. Around 35-40% of our income goes to taxes. It pays for our health care (and I have received FAR better care with much less of a wait than when I was in the US), roads, police, fire protection, unemployment, environmental protection, preschool, education through doctorates, nutritious school meals, 16 months of parental leave per child, a monthly stipend per child, regardless of income, excellent sick leave and long term benefits, retirement, reimbursement for miles traveled to doctor visits, long-term programs and facilities for those living with disabilities, excellent elderly facilities and assisted living communities, programs for immigrants and refugee programs. Those are just the benefits I can come up with off the top of my head. It's not 50% for health care. Not even close.
The government health care covered the conception of my daughter, my wife's two week hospital stay and monitoring, her cesarean, all of her after care, my daughter's two week hospital stay when diagnosed with multiple tumors, three sedated MRIs, groundbreaking treatments that saved her life, the medicine that would cost us $700 a month without coverage and her monthly specialist follow-ups. Not once did we even have to break a sweat about the cost of the procedures. That is not something afforded to most in the US. Universal health care is fantastic when done correctly.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than
f**ckin' perfect!
