What a hot mess of a movie that was, droll, dull, unwatchable in parts ( filmed so dark you have no idea what's happening. The Ballroom scene a perfect example )
Jack ( Tom cruise ) has his name spoken more than any other movie I can think of , Jack , Jack, Jack at least 500 times.
The movie did have one of my favourite lines in the history of WTF moments, " Our Job Is Not to Remember Remember"
I can understand why they opened this in nearly every country a week or so before the States, it was the only way this turd could float!

rosscoe(au)...when in recent time has there really been a watchable Tom Cruise movie?
Just out of curiosity the last time I went to the theatre and paid was in 1999 for Magnolia and I walked out of that thinking WTF. I had to just google his filmography to figure it out in fact! Even reviewing that list I've more or less trusted the judgement of others not to look back and be turned into a pillar of salt. Many I've seen on DVD at home and have been thankful the only thing I lost was time.
Amazing the teflon this guy wears and is still a draw to studios and screaming fans.

The only two Tom Cruise films I watch:
EYES WIDE SHUT -- Kubrick's grim satire of sexual mores. Cruise plays a doctor whose entire world is turned upside down when his wife reveals that she's actually had desires for other men, inspiring him to take a dark and grimly comic walk on the wild side. May not be everybody's cup of tea, but I like it a lot.
WAR OF THE WORLDS -- Cruise's trademark unflappability is put to the test here, as he plays Ray, a regular suburban type guy who finds himself stuck with his kids when the Martians decide to invade planet Earth. His attempts to handle assorted situations get increasingly desperate, culminating in one remarkable scene where he just plain breaks down and starts crying in front of his kids. The movie's got some severe problems, no doubt, but Cruise's performance isn't really one of them.
There's no way I'm sitting through OBLIVION.

Posted: 4/18/13 at 12:11pmI'm actually a Tom Cruise fan. There was a time when that wasn't a "taboo" statement to make. His problem isn't that he's not a good actor because you can look at certain films he's made and see thy he's extremely talented. But his problem for well over a decade now is that he takes himself entirely too seriously as an "action star". And Tom Cruise isn't an action star. His film choices have been so misguided and it's a real shame because when you get him in things like MAGNOLIA (sorry I think that film is brilliant on every single level), EYES WIDE SHUT (my favorite Kubrick film and one of my personal favorite films), JERRY MAGUIRE, THE FIRM, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, A FEW GOOD MEN etc. then you get to see the Tom Cruise that used to be. But MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8, JACK REACHER, WAR OF THE WORLDS etc do nothing for him acting wise.

Not Cruise's biggest fan but I liked (or rather, the performance) him in:
Magnolia
Born on the Fourth of July
Minority Report
Collateral
Eyes Wide Shut
Top Gun (I know..... it is a glorified US Navy ad but Tony Scott could direct an action movie)
I feel like I need to re-watch War of the Worlds. Spielberg's last decade has sort of been a case of re-watching is much more rewarding than the first glance, at least for me. That said, Justin Chatwin and Dakota Fanning as the children along with Tom Cruise 'playing catch' scenes are PAINFUL.
My main issue with this movie still lies in Joseph Kosinski. If he has another film that has a nine-figure budget then I give up.
