Not surprisingly, Paul Krugman has the exact opposite opinion of Goth! Via Michael Musto:
[T]he rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people.

I particularly liked Krugman's last line:

"And if the protests goad some politicians into doing what they should have been doing all along, Occupy Wall Street will have been a smashing success."

The main thing I'm concerned about is that I feel that there's a very real possibility of violence arising.

If you're exploring credit unions, remember to look at how they are insured in case of failure. Most are not insured by the FDIC.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Kad - the LA occupation already showed a great deal of the tensions in place.

Of course, our favorite blowhard Rush has been broadcasting (in his usual bellow) that this whole thing is being orchestrated by Obama and clan to instigate riots before the election.

To Goth's point. Make sure any credit union you join is portected by the NCUA. The NCUA provides protection through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, or NCUSIF. The United States Government backs the fund, and it has the same $250,000 coverage limits as FDIC insurance.

The FEDERAL Deposit Insurance Corporation? Isn't that just more Obama socialism mumbo jumbo? Let the market decide what banks or credit unions are worthy! Lose your money in a failed bank and you'll be a little more careful next time.

I'm hoping for any and all violence and possibility thereof to quell. Also hoping for the emergence of zero Robespierre-like figures and zero 18th-century cosplay of any kind.

I'm hoping that we'll evolve past the birdlike/reptilian sections of our brains and be able to be proactive and peaceful without having to resort to aforementioned violence and having to exploit Sung Zhu-isms like "people will respond only to things that are in their self interest" and do something bad to the 1%. And also hoping that for many people a sense of community is not only strengthened, but is something that will endure past immediate adversity.

Hoping that healthcare joins the fray (I use 'fray' soooo figuratively...because peaceful=good) as well.

My first thought was what does Zero Mostel have too do with any of this.

But, I think to translate: You hope that people do not resort to violence or violent rhetoric, and no one emerges as a the "Occupy Wallstreet Authenticity Police" to determine who is and is not with the movement. And Renaissance Faire participants should stay away.

Then, you are hoping that we can expand our minds, our expectations, and our comfort zone to embrace different ideas and thoughts peacefully and without resorting to actual violence against the 1%. And, that the experience of Occupy Wall Street will serve as a reset to help strengthen our feeling of community and connectivity. (Which I kind of hope for as well).

That the issue of health care is added to the issues currently being discussed by those participating in the demonstration.

And, finally, that while the band Fray may or may not be good, the word fray is only good in the context of participating in Occupy Wall Street if the joining of the fray is in a non-violent, peaceful manner.

Is that about right?

No, that's not what I meant at all, YWIW. You have it completely wrong.

But I do want Fray to show up, definitely. They rock. I've never heard of them, but I'm sure they rock.

Btw, Ren Faire would be earlier than 18th century.

Aw, thanks Namo. Sure, why not? The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens book early, so we'd better get our planning on.

Well then, I give up. I am usually pretty good at trying to decipher things such as your post. I tried to understand what you were saying but somewhere between your intent and my perception, it was lost. It must be my terribly muddled brain.

FWIW, Ren Faires can encompass a variety of time period. But you are right, most do reflect a period and a place much different than Robespierre's Reign of Terror in France. Most actually refer to the reign of Queen Elizabeth the 1st. I was just actually trying to pull a common cosplay reference that people would understand because honestly, many people do not understand what "cosplay" means. But perhaps you were referring to Harry Potter and the Quiddich folks who sometimes play in Central Park. Or maybe a group from Lord of the Rings. Or some folks from the NY Comic-Con. Unless of course you are talking about a touring production of Les Miserable. That cosplay group might make sense. So, perhaps I should have said that hopefully a touring company from Les Miserables stays away.

And, as someone who actually studied Chinese history and Philosophy (though many many moons ago), please let me know who this Sung Zhu is. I honestly never heard of him. Maybe it is in the translation of the name. Or maybe, he has come to prominence since I graduated (many a moons ago). I thought maybe you were referring to Sun Tzu, but was not sure.

And Namo, in a virtual heartbeat.

And again, sorry for the misinterpretation. It must be all on me. I will work on it.

YWIW and Namo, I was kidding, although your post did confuse me a bit, YWIW. I wasn't sure why you'd go over every point like that in detail. Of course you understood the post correctly. I've been bullied so much on this board that it's hard to tell where people are coming from sometimes. Not that you guys are bullies. This board is just a wry place to be a lot of the time.

And people don't know "cosplay"? Huh. Thought it was more mainstream. Oh well.

Cosplay (????, kosupure?), short for "costume play",[1] is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Characters are often[2] drawn from popular fiction in Japan, but recent trends have included American cartoons and Sci-Fi. Favourite sources include manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai and fantasy movies. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa. There is also a subset of cosplay culture centered around sex appeal, with cosplayers specifically choosing characters that are known for their attractiveness and/or revealing (even explicit) costumes.

Also known as an obscure reference, usuallly inserted in conversation in lieu of clear expression, particularly in wry places.

nygirl - honestly, I really had a hard time understanding what you were trying to say and was trying to translate (with perhaps a bit of humor). I actually deleted some of the more snarky comments in my initial response because if we are all supporting the same thing, it was counterproductive.

And yeah, maybe on this board you have a bigger percentage of folks who know what cosplay is, but I would hazard to guess it is not as well known as you think.

And, seriously, who is the Chinese philosopher you are referring to? Was it Sun Tzu (who wrote the "Art of War") or someone else?

And, the whole cosplay discussion brought this to mind.

I wrote: "and I am going down to a locally owned store and buying supplies from the wish list on the Occupy website and bringing it on down."

Goth wrote: You're such a tool.

Today I took six months' worth of debit card usage fees I would owe Bank of America if I don't remove my funds from there, and I spent it on hand sanitizer, vitamin C, poster board, Sharpies, dry erase markers and cough drops. I read the list on the Occupy website and these were things they were running low on despite high demand. I brought the items down to the site. I was monitoring myself, to see if at any point I felt like a tool, as Goth suggested. I didn't. I felt like I was pitching in. I felt like I was helping some people who asked for assistance. I felt like it was something Dorothy Day might do.

I recommend everybody who's able and interested to pitch in in any way they can. It's heartening to see people raise their voices and start a real, adult conversation about this exact moment in time. I can't believe they have three hour meetings where they make decisions via consensus, god bless their patient souls.

An interesting factoid floated by while I was onsite:

Number of criminal referrals made by federal bank regulators to the FBI during the 1980s savings and loan banking crisis: 10,000. Number made during the current crisis: zero.

And someone said the Occupy movement is targeting the wrong people!

I am doing the next best thing and just sending some money. But Namo, seriously, if you make another run, let me know and I will send you some to help via PayPal (a check may take a bit longer to get there).

And, since tools help make things, repair things that are broken, and demonstrate on a routine basis that they are useful, I think being called a "tool" in this instance is a pretty good thing.

ETA: And I feel like being a tool today. I went though my disaster recovery supplies and put together big box of stuff on the LA list.
