So what have the other 99% of us been up to? (This does not include Roxy or Goth as they still dream of being in the 1% one day.)
Seen any good signs? Visited the Occupy sites in your area?
I have finally gotten motivated to move my not particularly prodigious bank accounts away from the dreaded Bank of America. Then I am going to take the $60 they would have charged me to use a debit card to access my own money, and I am going down to a locally owned store and buying supplies from the wish list on the Occupy website and bringing it on down.
Oh, and Amanda Palmer played at Occupy Boston this afternoon.
occupy together
I applaud your dumping BofA.
It pisses me off to no end that banks are just holding money to improve their balance sheets at the expense of offering loans to small businesses to get the economy going.
And now they want to charge the same people who they deny loans to under the justification that they have a "right to be greedy to make a profit.
At the same time though, the occupy movement (is it officially a movement yet?) is a rudderless, agenda free group. They should be the anti-tea party.
We all know there is a woefully increasing income disparity, but what's truly upsetting is that profits are UP for most firms and yet aggregate wages have shrunk or remained static. And I'm not even going into the unemployment issue.
So come on Occupiers! Start breaking it down and developing some real demands that can be implemented. If the fiscal policy is all stimulus all the time, then WHERE THE HELL IS IT GOING????
(hint: google any major firm's financials and check the P/L statement)
Oh yea, F##K citibank too. They are raising their checking acct. fees.
And in case you were unaware, Wells Fargo began instituting debit card fees too. It's only rolled out in four states thus far, but that's just the beginning.

I dream of a world without NAMO but alas that will not happen.
What we need now is a real soaking rainstorm . Figure it out.
The Wells Fargo debit card fee is being tested in Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. I primarily use my debit card and hate the thought of being charged to access my own money. Charges to use the card, charges to use the teller. This is getting crazy.

I'm taking my funds out of BofA and opening a checking account at my credit union and I did tell them why I'm doing so. Of course, I couldn't get oin their website to tell them that since said site has been "down" since September 30. Gee....wonder why that would be...
I'm thinking of getting out of BofA also but I bet Chase ends up doing the same thing in time.

"and I am going down to a locally owned store and buying supplies from the wish list on the Occupy website and bringing it on down."
You're such a tool. People who are protesting capitalism are getting a bit uncomfortable and so they get around it by creating a wish list and forcing other people to bring things to them. You should tell them to get off their lazy butts and go find the items for themselves.
Goth, did you copy/paste from Cain?
And maybe it's me, but I don't see anyone forcing anyone else to buy/bring them stuff.
Where do you come up with this crap?
I'm not sure that laziness is what leads people to participate in actions like this.
Wait, you mean all those people may have actually been busting their asses looking for work for the past two years?
But that's not what Herman and Goth say, so it can't be the case.
They are not protesting capitalism - they are protesting the oligarchy that has over taken much of our economy.
Once we stop subsidizing oil, corporate farms and other big business special interests, come back and talk to me about free markets and capitalism.
The question I have is why are those on the right protesting the growing Oligarchy that has developed in this country?

"They are not protesting capitalism - they are protesting the oligarchy that has over taken much of our economy."
Obviously you're not following the story. One of their dilemmas was whether they should knit their own sleeping bags or go to a Salvation Army and buy them.
And if they were protesting an oligarchy, they would be in Washington DC where laws are made. I get the whole concept of Wall Street, but you can't blame banks for playing by the rules that Congress does or does not set for them. Banks that accept FDIC protection do have to follow government requirements.
And have you read the lsit of demands that they issued? It's like it was written by a child. It makes no sense whatsoever.
DC is Wall Street's bitch, Goth. I don't think _you_ are following the story.
"It makes no sense whatsoever."
So I see they have something in common with the Republic candidates.

"DC is Wall Street's bitch,"
Exactly why the fight should be in DC.
Look, Goth being obtuse because it fits his narrative. As if Wall Street has no relationship to big business.
For the record, here is the beginning of Statement by Occupy Wall Street.
As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.
As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.
They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one's skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
...
To the people of the world,
We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.
Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.
To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.
Join us and make your voices heard!

Realistically- where can I go if I close my BOA account? I have been shopping for a new bank and $60 a year for my checking/savings/online billpay/debit card is shaping up to be a pretty sweet deal. Anybody got any sweet deals?
I have had a credit union my whole life. If you can find a way to get into a credit union, that would be my suggestion.
BofA has my mortgage, and that is it.
Credit Union.
I also belong to a credit union. The down side is that they do not have convenient "banks" and you utilize ATMs a lot. Fortunately, my CU refunds up to $8 a month in ATM fees and I have a convenience store chain (WAWA) that doesn't charge ATM fees.

I'll second YWIW's suggestion. Credit unions are member-owned. Even my mortgage is through my credit union, which doesn't sell them off to the highest bidder like banks do.
I am lucky - my credit union is affiliated with WesCom, and they actually have an ATM in my building. I think I can take up to 8 withdrawals a month without a fee.
Also you could look into a local bank.
