I sent my L5Y booklet to Sherie at the end of April. I might have been better off sending it to Norbert, but I love Sherie too and for some reason it was easier to gush L5Y with her. LOL.
When I sent the booklet in, I already prepared myself for the thought of never seeing it again. It would be nice if I did, though. :)
Since Norbert puts so much into every performance, I can see how he might get burned out eventually and want to go on to the next thing. I like that he stays as long as he thinks he can keep the energy up.
The Theatre Wing interview is priceless. Norbert and Sherie can both get animated and passionate when talking about theatre. Now, if only the ATW could only do a seminar on Piazza, as well....
I probably won't see Rent on its opening day, only b/c I rarely ever do that. I'm the only person I know interested in Rent here, so who knows who I'll end up seeing it with?
It took me a week to see Star Wars and I *still* haven't seen Batman Begins. The closest I've ever gotten to opening day for films? Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Have a good 4th, everyone!

Saw "Piazza" yesterday--as wonderful as everyone says, with an A+ cast..(rivals DRS!).
Yesterday was one of the most beautiful days, weather-wise, I have ever spent in NY...saw Jennifer Capriati at the Time Warner Sephora and Brad Oscar at Gristede's..
Darlings! I'm back from seeing DRS last night. I can't even tell you what a Norbert high I'm on. SO wonderful. SO charming. SO hysterical. SO....sigh....as he says in "Son of Great Big Stuff"...I'm so very very HAPPY.
I'll give you guys a full review later in the week. I actually have to go get ready because I'm seeing Spelling Bee today, but it was just so wonderful.
Alejandra-Piazza seminar-you read my mind!
Wendy-So glad you finally saw Piazza and loved it! I'll be bold and say it's my favorite show this season.
Scoundrel-Why do you want to send your L5Y booklet when you can just get it signed at the stagedoor? Btw, nice collection! Echoing Hedwig-Matt is purdy. :) I sent Wicked an e-mail stating how angry I was that scalpers made it so difficult to get tickets to Idina's last perf. They sent me an autographed playbill. hmmm...
Hello Everyone!
I am on a Last Five Years kick at the moment and just played it for a friend who after one week has decided it is her favorite musical score.
I hope all is well for everyone, I love Piazza and want to see a seminar as well. It is one of the first on my list when I return to town (along with a 9th visit to DRS)
SP!!! Man, have I missed you around these parts! So cool to gear that you're converting people to showtunes, keep up the good work. Hope your having fun at camp and I can't wait to hear what you think of Piazza.
smart penguin! Yay! So happy to hear from you. Hope you're having a great summer. Can't wait to read reports about DRS and Piazza next time you see them. :)
broadway betty: so, I'm vacationing and visiting my sister's house, right? And I've misplaced one thing--my Piazza cd! Argh! I'm going *crazy.* It's just a copy--the original cd is back home--but I don't want to go the rest of the trip without listening to it. I just can't. Luckily, though, I can always go to the Nonesuch site if I need a fix, for now.
I also brought DRS, of course.
thespian geek: you will *love* Piazza. :)
Alejandra
I hope Norbs has a wonderful, restful vacation--he REALLLY does deserve it! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
How was everyone's 4th? I was out all day but I taped 14 hours of the Monk marathon so I'll start on that tonight.
Alejandra:I can't believe you lost your Piazza cd! How can you have a successful vaca without it? At least you can go to the nonesuch website and hear Adam Guettel's demos. Btw, I saw the movie the other night and I got so excited to see the show again. And Matt is a waaaaay better Fabrizio than George Hamilton.
Wendyidn't you see Spelling Bee? How was is?
No, I saw your other fave--Piazza! I thought it was delightful and the 3 leads were perfection. 'Still don't understand how Dan Fogler (whom I liked) won over Matthew Morrison. BTW--they are giving out a free 2 song CD to theatre goers--with "Divinding Day" and "Say it Somehow".
Betty- I wouldn't want to bring it to the stagedoor because I'd also like to get it signed by Sherie, and she apparently now exits the front with Joanna, or just doesn't come out at all, that kinda sucks, lol. But who knows, and thanks for the compliment on my collection. .
Wendy-I haven't seen Bee yet but I still don't think that Dan Fogler gives a better performance than Matt. They're still giving out the cds? Cool! I have 4 so far, I'll make them into coasters or mosaic art, lol. I hope it's at TKTS tomorrow cuz akitarent and I want to see it. Did you buy your ticket in advance?
Scoundrel-It stinks that Sherie doesn't come out anymore. Good thing I got them all early in the run. You keep sending fanmail, keep that collection growing.
Yes, I bought a ticket in advance, a few weeks ago--got a ticket for myself and a friend. $25 discount, so $75 per.
BTW- Is there anyplace better to see a show than the Vivian Beaumont? Great sightlines...
double post Updated On: 7/5/05 at 03:24 PM
Hey everybody...
I saw the show for my third time last Thursday (6/30). Norbert was out of control! The last time I saw it was early in March, and I can tell he's settled into the role. The gang with me loved it, too.
Also spotted Norbert going into the Gershwin when I went to meet up with my sister and her friend at Wicked. Too cute!
broadway betty: I found my cd and listened to it at the beach today. Thank God!
About Sherie: recently she has been going out in the front with Joanna, but as recently as last week one fan who posts on Idina's forum said Sherie was at the stagedoor the night this fan went, and got to discuss L5Y with her. Wouldn't I love to do that? *sigh* Sherie also signed her playbill.

Thanks for all the greetings, I'll be going back into hiding soon. I'm loving the mountains but miss the city and the shows badly. I saw a pretty decent summer stock production of Man of La Mancha the other day though, so at least I had my fix.
I'll be all about the reports when I return!
Hope you are all having a fantastic summer!
-going into the Gershwin, can't help but give Norbs props for putting his "lady friend" in priority
Hi guys,
Just a quick review of DRS Saturday night, July 2.
UM...I LOVED IT! It was hysterical and fun and fulfilled all my expectations and then some. A quick rundown of the performances:
John Lithgow: brilliant! What perfect casting for this role. I've always been a fan of Mr. Lithgow's and I quite frankly felt honored to see him perform live. He was fantastic in the entire show and seems like such a giving performer. In my opinion, one of the best performances by one of our best performers.
Norbert Leo Butz: what can I say? I adore Norbert and am so thrilled he won the Tony for this amazing performance. To steal a show from people like John Lithgow and Joanna Gleason is not an easy feat, but he does it. He IS the show. This is the performance of a lifetime, and he is absolutely perfect in it. The physical comedy is the best I've seen on stage. Ruprecht is quite frankly the funniest thing I've ever seen in a show. This show is Norbert's show all the way.
Sherie Rene Scott: Her voice is amazing and her character is a LOT of fun. She was actually my least favorite performer in the show. I thought that she was not very interactive with the other performers and seems disinterested in the scene if/when she weren't directly involved. The best example I can give is during the Schuffhausen "examination" of Freddy/Buzz, she seemed to just be waiting for her cues. Maybe that was a character choice; to have Christine seems flighty. But, it was a bit distracting to me. Otherwise, she did a fine job.
Joanna Gleason: a small role, but a memorable turn. LOVED her romance with Andre...the robe scene was hysterical. She's just an amazing actress and again, I was honored to see her perform.
Joe Cassidy (in for Gregory Jbara): I was disappointed that Mr. Jbara was out, but having not seen his performance, I have to say Mr. Cassidy was fabulous. He was charming and funny and handsome and suave. I understand he also is the understudy for Freddy, and that proves that he is brilliant if he can portray both of these diverse roles.
Sara Gettelfinger: HYSTERICAL. I usually skip over "Oklahoma?" on the cast recording, but I won't do that again. Sara is wonderful in this part...so funny and quite the scene stealer. She has a long, illustrious comic acting future ahead of her.
OK, I realize that was a bit long, but I just enjoyed the show so much and am so proud of Norbert and the rest of the cast.
I'll shut up now....:P
Great review! I agree with Sherie seeming a bit out of it, but that only happened the first time I saw it, not quite sure why, the second time I saw it her voice was so-so but she was into it, the third time I saw it she was REALLY into it and her voice was awesome.
Maybe it had something to do with the audience? I know that sometimes if the whole audience isn't great then they are a bit out of it, or feel it's harder for them to perform and please. I'm not making sense...lol.
Normally I'd agree, DRS, but the audience was fabulous. They were very supportive.
As a matter of fact, after Norbert sang the line "I think we still deserve a hand" in Dirty Rotten Number, the crowd went beserk and applauded wildly...same w/ after they sit in the lounge chairs...went on for minutes....
Hmm, that is odd. Maybe she was just out of it, lol. Everybody has off days, who knows. I LOVE when you have a great audience, gives you that extra umph to go insane and also inspires the actors to just go all-out in their performance.
Alert--DRS is gettting even cooler--check out Broadway.com for photos of the cast with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddy Prinze, Jr. (Freddy, meet Freddy--LOL.)
Great shirt on Norbs.
Apparently July 2nd was "Wear White to Work Day" and Sherie didn't get the memo.
I can't read what Norbert's shirt says.
It says "thespian geek, you drive me crazy"--with a car to symbolize the drive. LOL
