Oh, Meryl.

88% of non-black people per audition for a role means an 88% chance of the role going to a non-black person. So 12 black candidates per 100 auditionees does not equal 12 black Sandy's. In fact, a black person getting any race neutral role is very rare because of this simple fact. I don't know how to make it easier for you.

Oh, Meryl.

So you're saying it's not racism that excludes black performers, it's a terrible understanding of statistics?

FindingNamo said: "I'd love it if 12% of the characters I saw in American productions of every kind were black. But it doesn't come close. Know why? White favoritism?

Why do you think "they want white Sandyd because of the majority or whatever' is something you don't question?

"

Actually, it's more than 12 %. Out of every 8/9 roles in a tv series, musical or film nowadays at least 1 or 2 are black. Which is very strange, considering that there were 8 times the amount of other races auditioning per role. Unless they cast deliberately on race of course.

And I don't know why they preferred a white Sandy. Maybe they wanted the character simply to be a majority.

So what do you actually prefer?

That 12 out of 100 people auditioning for the role of Sandy are black? (proportional representation). Which gives an 88% chance that the role is cast not black. Which also gives a big chance that the whole cast turns out non-black. So, basically not casting on race at all, just on chance.

Or that the casting directors prefers a white Sandy, because they want her to look like a majority or whatever reason, and therefore only invite white girls, but therefore they decide (to avoid twaddle) to cast another role, like Marty per definition black, and only invite black girls, because they can accept that role looking like a minority or whatever. So this means casting purposely on race.

Which one do you actually prefer and why?

Every time I read this thread title, I want to rewrite the lyrics to this song with "Oh, Meryl."

Yep. YOUR terrible understanding of statistics.

Because you seem to live by the fairytale that when 100 people audition for a role of which 10 are black, and 90 are other races, that that equals "1 out of every 10 roles cast black".

While it actually means that 10 roles are probably all cast non black. Because there is always a 9 fold of the amount of other races competing, so a 9 fold chance the role goes to another race.

Or "Oh, Dave19"!

Oh Dave19

Stop going back and editing

Add it to the thread

Don't go back and try

to change history on the fly

Cuz your argument's dead

If you can't make a choice between those 2 examples, I know enough. You prefer disproportional representation, as long as it favors black people. There comes your double agenda peeking around the corner again.

LOL

Thank you, Namo. I needed that.

Representation is what we see and what we see is white white white. What you imagine in auditions is made up. You're making it up. PROVE these claims you make about who is auditioning. PROVE IT!!!

Dave has done some serious racial polling at auditions. I mean...his data is kind of impressive.

I'm a casting director. You would be amazed if you knew how much of our database and the amount of applications actually mirrors society.

Does that shock you? You had hoped for more crooked percentages at auditions? Why?

Oh, Meryl.

Again, anecdotes from your life can NOT be broadened to any culture at large, particularly in the US.

Sorry. That's just how it works.

What white things have you been casting lately? Oh wait, the white goes without saying. What things have you been casting lately?

Oh, Meryl.

I understand you want 50% of the auditants to be black (preferably more), but that is not how it works. There is an 8 fold number of other races auditioning for each role.

If you want equality in treatment, the first thing you need to do is to understand that.

You know that thing you do? Not the part where you go back and edit what you said AFTER people respond to it, but the other thing? The one where you just make up numbers that have come from nowhere and proceed with them as fact?

I understand you want 50% of the auditants to be black (preferably more)

You did it again. I never said that anywhere. And you have zero credibility. Stop making up figures and start admitting you have a thing with, well, let's call it white favoritism because it sounds less pernicious than what it really is. You favor whites. Dave19 favors whites. Dave19 favors whites and he has no credibility.

I understand you want 50% of the auditants to be black (preferably more), but that is not how it works. There is an 8 fold number of other races auditioning for each role.

Or perhaps he wants to see 12% of Sandys to be POC? If 12% of the auditioning pool are non-white, and there's no inexplicable talent skew in any specific ethnicity, then over a wide range of time and data collected, that percentage of minority actors would be cast in the role. If it is more or less, then there is some other influence skewing the data. How many major productions have been done of Grease? How many black Sandys can you name? How many Valjeans? One understudy?

A great deal of the protests and the arguments being put forward are because of situations where there is ZERO representation in major award categories, major roles, and entire productions. Currently the US population is around 37% non-white. There certainly isn't a 37% representation overall in major mainstream entertainment, even in programming that is supposed to represent modern culture. You mentioned Orange is the New Black. If you can't see the issue with applauding the racial casting in a show about prison, there's little you'll see from anything anyone here is saying.

Oh, Meryl.

That's where you go wrong.

When 100 people audition for a role of which 10 are black, and 90 are other races, that does NOT mean "1 out of every 10 roles should be cast black".

What it actually means is that 10 roles are probably all cast non black. Because there is always a 9 fold of the amount of other races competing, so a 9 fold chance the role goes to another race.

So you are saying you prefer a system where we deliberately cast on race?

Please explicitly explain where you are getting these figures and please note this is not the first time I've asked.

Oh, Meryl.

You keep talking about statistics. Let's remove black and white. If 90% of lottery ticket purchasers are right handed, then the other 10% must be left handed. Each round of lotto ticket sales is unique, with different numbers pulled and different people purchasing tickets, but let's say the right vs. left ratio remains the same. In 10 lotto number pulls, statistically speaking, one of those winners should be left handed. Given chance, you could easily get 10/10 right handed people. However, over the course of 100, 1000, 10,000 lotto number pulls, you will see that the winners will be about 10% left handed. That is what happens in a completely random, non-biased pool. That is NOT what happens overall in the audition process.

I also don't buy your personal statistic of 88% of auditioning performers being white, but that's not the argument.

It only means that with every unique round there is a 90% chance it's won by a right handed person.

So that goes for all 10 rounds. So there is a 90% chance that all 10 rounds will be won by a right handed person. It's not like they pull 10 times in the same round. So your conclusion that 1 winner should be left handed is wrong. Yes, each round is unique, you must understand that, and also each person with a ticket is unique. So if, for example, 1000 people buy a ticket, every person has a 0,1% chance. Chances are just bigger that it turns out to be a right handed person per pulling but that does not increase any chance per person.

Don't confuse personal/individual success with right handed success. Every individual has just as much competition.

And Namo, I look at the population. There are minorities and majorities. Is that a problem to you? My point is, that if you deliberately want a crooked percentage, then something more is going on.

Oh, Meryl.

You seem to be the only one wanting a crooked percentage. POC represent almost 40% of the US population. Worldwide, even more. That ratio is rarely seen on stage and screen unless the productions are specifically FOR minorities or about drugs or prison. It's hardly ever seen at mainstream award shows. That's the reason people feel a need for the BET and ALMA awards.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
#72

Oh, Meryl.

If you can't accept that a minority will automatically get less roles (like I explained, extreme competition, like every person), and you feel the need to create own separate worlds and awards, that is fine. be my guest.

But realize what consequences that has. Bigger race gap.

My point is that this will happen, also when people don't look at race at all (see previous post). So your solution of deliberately casting on race is wrong.

#73

Oh, Meryl.

No one is saying that minorities, since they are in the minority, would get the same amount of roles. The ratios should be closer to that of the actual population. You are the only person I have seen saying that minorities should make up more than 50% of those case. You keep saying that. Those debating you are not. An actual representation of the population should be seen over time. That hasn't happened. Joseph Fiennes can play Michael Jackson, but you can't name a not-white Sandy.
