So many of us white people instinctively personalize a general question about the state of diversity so that we immediately think it's an attack on us personally. There is never ever ever a time when the answer is "I have played women from many cultures!". Ever.

And this is the second well meaning white award-winning woman actor who has juxtaposed women with people of color, and it is just a terrible rut to fall into.

According to that article, her "African" comment was in answer to a question concerning her knowledge of Arab films, not about diversity. Her answer still doesn't make any sense, but since this is a click-bait takedown piece, I'm not necessarily going to trust it until I fully understand the context (which of course the article makes as vague as possible).

Is it also true that Meryl recently said she isn't a feminist because she loves men?

ETA what Meryl told Time Out last year:

“Men should look at the world as if something is wrong when their voices predominate,” Streep said. “They should feel it. People at agencies and studios, including the parent boards, might look around the table at the decision-making level and feel something is wrong if half their participants are not women. Because our tastes are different, what we value is different. Not better, different.”

She also said she does not consider herself a feminist. “I am a humanist, I am for nice easy balance.”

I've got that queasy feeling ol' Meryl might be yet another of those "discussing racism is racist to whites" we've previously seen from old white Brits who won't let go of the rigid British caste structure, no matter what.

If "we're all African," as she says, and it doesn't matter if we're an all-white panel, then the same argument could be made that "we're all human," so there's no difference whether we're male or female panel.

She is so myopic in her inclusive views. That was really a dumb thing to say.

I agree. This is a problem. The percentage of black people getting hired is much higher than the percentage of white people, compared to amount of people auditioning and population.

That is not fair.

Grease live has at least a 20% black cast, while the black population is nowhere near that. Neither the amount of black people auditioning. I hope. Because casting directors can deliberately cast/invite black, that is fine, but then why hide the reason, or invite any white people at all for a certain role?

Just say: we want to keep focusing on race, we want more blacks in everything compared to the percentage of actual population and it must be higher than it already is and we will never be content because the race gap can never be big enough.

That also doesn't solve the problem but at least it's less hypocrite.
