Oklahoma Rep. Sally Kern, openly gay church pastor face off on television

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_qDVwr0Jew&eurl=

Oklahoma House Rep. Sally Kern made an Easter Sunday appearance on KFOR-TV's "Flash Point" to face off with an openly gay pastor, elaborating on her recent leaked speech and defending her views.

A spirited theological and political debate ensued between Rep. Kern, host Kevin Ogle, panelists Burns Hargis and Mike Turpen, and Dr. Scott Jones of Oklahoma City's Cathedral of Hope.

"I was speaking to a group of Republicans; grassroots Republicans," Kern explained of the original speech, which gained worldwide attention after posted on the Internet by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, "and I was talking about the homosexual agenda, and how they are out there putting forth--funding very heavily--homosexual and pro-homosexual candidates to run against, and defeat, conservatives across the nation.

"I did talk about what I believe...scientific evidence, health evidence...proves that the homosexual lifestyle is a dangerous lifestyle. And, yes, I did compare it to being more dangerous than terrorism. And my point in doing that, gentlemen, was this: Everybody knows terrorism destroys and tears down, and that was the only analogy I was making is that the homosexual agenda, this lifestyle which is so destructive to individuals, is at the heart trying to tear down what is the bedrock foundation of our society, which is the family and traditional marriage.

adamgreer - the thing is, what she said IS based on reality as she perceives it, and there are those who share her perspective. Now, whether they should be labled "grassroots Republicans" or not could be debated (although, it could apply to many the Republicans have relied on for the last few election cycles.) And coming from their perspective, it IS ok to not only take that stance, but to speak openly about it. As far as they're concerned, this is nothing short of a battle for the soul of the country.

The Gay pastor did a piss poor job. Sally did most the talking and this pastor failed to mention other refferences in the bible that were considered not common and an abomination. She used the bible throughout the entire discussion and apparently lives by it. So, why didn't he bring up how the bible okays owning slaves or how it's your duty to tone someone who works on the sabbath? I HATE these people who use the bible as their only defense but pick and choose the parts they live by and ignore the rest of it. She is a very ugly excuse for a human being and I would have really made the bitch cry if I was there.

For me, I have no interest in engaging in discussion about that book. It's been done by many before, and doesn't get at the root of the problem. Should it be used as a foundation for civil law? I personally respond with a resounding NO, and feel that THAT'S the discussion that should be taking place publicly.

DG, I understand that in her eyes, what she said was probably absolutely fine. It was clear that she never expected this to become a "thing" and end up on youtube. However, when it did, rather than defend her views, she falls back on the, "Well, I was speaking to grassroots Republicans" argument, as if she doesn't even believe what she is saying.

Yeah, I caught that to. He also referred to gays as 'you people'. Comparing homosexuality and adultry in the same breath as both being sins made me want to scream.

Well, I'm not straight, and I'm not Christian.

So where does that put me?

Screw that old hag. There's no point debating with her. She's so set in her ways that she won't even come to terms with her own gay son. She's a worthless, hateful crone who has corrupted no telling how many children as a teacher.

Take a look at all the incredibly nasty columns that have appeared this week, no doubt spurred by this woman's "plight."

Never underestimate the convictions of the "other side"... This woman is a perfect example of people using the Bible to justify their own hatred. As much as it makes my skin crawl to read this interview it's always good to get as much insight into the enemy as possible. They really believe these things and that's what we need to understand and work against.

The "homosexual agenda"... How many times did she mention that? My homosexual agenda every day is to get up in the morning, work out, go to work, visit BWW, go home, and, if I'm lucky, spend some quality time with friends, go to bed, wonder whether there is someone special out there for me, go to sleep, and start all over the next day. Is that what threatens the fabric of our society??

I've been involved in discussions about "indoctrination" and "sexuality is a choice" on lots of occasions and I think I've effectively disarmed some people...or at least got them thinking...by simply asking whether they thought THEY could wake up one morning and decide to change their sexual orientation. Not one of them has ever thought they could. So, I just ask them why they think I can if they can't...

That 'choice or not' conversation is another one I refuse to have. It shouldn't matter whether it is or not.

Frankly, given the choice of whether to turn straight or not, I'd say no. So in effect, I am choosing to be gay.

And it still shouldn't make any difference. It doesn't justify using it against me or anyone else based on their moral stance derived from their religious choice.
