I might get flack for this, but Jeff Goldblum. He plays the same character he was in Jurassic Park in every movie he's in. Are there any roles where he is different?

I totally agree with Jeff Goldblum, and most of the actors here. Tom Cruise used to do good work, but he's become a character of himself, with almost a Napoleon quality to him. He's really gone after the 'taller' action figure type roles to make up for the act that he's a short man, who has no real acting skills to speak of any more.

I would have agreed with Will Ferrell on SNL, but his movie roles have been different. Anchorman is very different from the character in Stranger Than Fiction.

Though he does do the "Will Ferrell" character fairly often.

As I knew before even looking at this thread, people are naming actors without even seeing all of their work. Jazz's (all too predictable) example of naming an actor who has shown such versatility over the years that most people are still amazed that he's the same guy who could go from Ace Ventura to a jaw droppingly astounding performance as Andy Kaufman (google it, Jazz).

By Jazz's definition, Bette Davis was a one note actress since she played a bitch a couple of times.

I think the only one-note actors are those who are so new and who blew up because of one characterization that they haven't gotten a chance to do anything more, assuming that they can.

Perhaps that's a fair assessment but it makes certain assumptions about the posters. Could it be that some actors hit pay-dirt and stay in their comfort zone to the extent that their hits completely over-shadow their on-screen corpus? I get that actors gotta eat but the complacency (or type-casting) of some undermines their talent or shores up their lack thereof depending on your perspective.

I deliberately excluded the more notable action-figures like Jason Statham, Chuck Norris, and the Governator. As others have intimated, Tom Cruise seems eager to join that illustrious group of film luminaries. It's not like Tom's pressed for the money these days.

Just for gits & shiggles, I've posted a link to someone's compilation of the 50 Worst Actors in Hollywood History. To me, these lists rarely have any cred.

There are cases where actors just go against type and fail miserably and Vince Vaughn in Psycho is one of those examples. Even if you concede that Gus van Sant was secretly making a point on how hopeless of an exercise it was to remake Psycho (and that he only agreed to direct it for sabotage sake), Vaughn trying to convey anything close to Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates was not working in that movie.

I wouldn't call Audrey Hepburn one-note, but I've always thought she was the type of actress who brought a lot of herself to her roles.

I'm hesitant to actually call Jennifer Hudson an actress, but since she holds an acting Oscar, I guess I have to. Her performances in DREAMGIRLS, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, SEX AND THE CITY, and on SMASH have all been the same level of embarrassing one-note singer-trying-to-act level.

To keep things positive, we should probably start another thread about successful MTA's, singer-turned-actors, and rapper-turned-actors. In my mind, apart from Charlize Theron they are few and far between.

Watch her and Albert Finney in Stanley Donen's Two for The Road. That movie is hot and when Albert Finney calls her a 'Bitch' she practically wears the phrase like a medal.

Good point, Wyn. Perhaps that's the closest he got to changing it up but even then....

Also, Yes. That remake was horrendous.

Not only Audrey Hepburn, but

Bette Davis
Joan Crawford
Grace Kelly, etc. and so forth.

Character actors like Meryl Streep who become stars despite disappearing into each role they play are few and far between.

Most screen stars ARE stars precisely because they tap into a certain essence and use it over and over in continually interesting ways. And so the public knows what it will get when it goes to a Bette Davis picture. (This is not to say such stars are UNskilled, just that they have a certain type of skill.)
