Oscar Season Is Soon Upon Us

Fall/Winter trailers are starting to pop up in theaters. I saw this one advertised today which definitely seems like it has "Oscar" drawn all over it and looks absolutely incredible. Any other trailers out yet for upcoming Oscar bait?

Oscar Season Is Soon Upon Us

There is already a thread on the "12 years a slave" trailer, but yes it looks great and very baity. Have you seen the WOLF OF WALL STREET trailer starring Leo Dicaprio? It's being Directed by Martin Scorsese.

So Lauren Bacall me, anything goes! *wink*

I think we should start predicting who will win right now.

I'm pulling for the Indy chick over the obviously mainstream established actress.

What about you?

I would like for the long-overdue character actor to win over the sniveling dude who was formerly a tween star who just did well on his first movie.

Call it a "lifetime achievement award" if you want. But he's earned it.

And I'm all for that movie with a subtle message that speaks to 13-year-olds, because that other sh*t that was adapted from some highbrow material like a Broadway show or a novel that nobody ever read? That just sucks.

I want current and relevant. Even if I won't remember it or the reason I liked it tomorrow morning.

ITW already has best picture in the bag, and Meryl is obviously winning best actress.

I didn't realize BLUE JASMINE is coming out on Friday. Or that THE BUTLER is out in a month. I thought they'd be released closer to Oscar season, but I'm excited to see both.

And if you're not being sarcastic, how the hell can we predict INTO THE WOODS' Oscar chances when it won't even be competing in this years' awards...? The casting hasn't even been finalized.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS looks like it could be an awards contender as well, even if only for Hanks. But the trailer looks pretty promising.

I cannot wait for GRAVITY, AMERICAN HUSTLE, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, and WOLF OF WALL STREET. Seems like a pretty exciting lineup this year.

Well, look who you're asking.

I Agree,WiCkEDrOcKS. This season looks pretty epic. I would also look into films like THE COUNSELOR starring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Here is the trailer:http://youtu.be/S4Tm7HX7bkc.

Fruitvale Station is about to blow up because of the cultural relevancy. The timing of the release could not have been better to get a bigger discussion about a small indie film.

I'm thinking Gravity or Elysium but not both will get in for Best Picture. Elysium has more successful Oscar contenders but perhaps too familiar a story to crossover. Gravity is far more ambitious but Alfonso Cuaran is totally hit or miss with the Academy.

I do think that Mud could sneak in unexpectedly as a Best Picture +1 contender (ala Extremely Loud... or The Blind Side). The reviews and viewership are there. It's whether or not the voters are passionate enough by the end of the year to go all-in on something that quiet and contemplative.

One thing that's becoming very clear is that Animated Feature is a total crapshoot this year. The eligible releases, so far, have been underwhelming. That could mean just nominating blockbuster sequels to films they actually liked the first time around or a wild field with a lot of foreign and indie animation...

So let me be the first to congratulate Planes on its Best Animated Feature nomination.

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I predict that Into the Woods won't get ANY Oscar nominations for this year, because it's not coming out until 2014.

I know that's risky, but that's just how I feel.

I'm pretty sure it won't happen, but I would love to see "The Place Beyond The Pines" get nominated. Was one of the most touching cinematic experiences i've had in quite a while.

What would make me happiest and least bored would be if there were little to no buzz, no spoonfed nominations and wins, no predictable outcomes, no clear trends in precursors, and the Academy members exercised independence of thought by actually just voting for whom and what they found most impressive.

Is anyone else tired of the Scorsese/DiCaprio bromance?

Just as much as I am of the Burton/Depp bromance.

Has anyone seen Only God Forgives? I know it's gotten fairly lackluster reviews but the last Refn/Gosling pairing Drive definitely had some buzz and its supporters. Wondering if it's worth the money.

Oscar-bait trailer here:

Idris Elba in MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
