How is 300 overrated? It's not really...rated at all.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
The Departed
The Incredibles
Spiderman 2
Pulp Fiction
Chariots of Fire

Cabaret
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Spider-Man (Just about every comic book movie that gets a rave.)
Happy Feet (I couldn't sit through the first 20 minutes.)
The Nutty Professer (Eddie Murphy re-make. It was terrible.)
Titanic
Disney's Pochahontas
The Sound of Music (It's good...but not brilliant...)
2001: A Space Odessey (sp?)
Chicago
Dreamgirls
Just about anything with Will Ferrel
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
I'm sure I could think of more...but I'll spare you all.

The Departed.
Babel (ugh, ugh, ugh)
Crash.
Little Miss Sunshine (if only we could've 'discovered' it instead of having it shoved down our throats as 'fresh.')

The Lion King is more than overrated, I just hate the film. Also, all Star Wars films. Well, the original three. I refused to see the rest.
The Sound of Music is underrated, imo.

I agree with Sideways. I just watched it for the first time a couple of nights ago and while it had it's moments, I thought it was pretty overrated.
I'm still scratching my head as to how Thomas Hayden Church got an Oscar nod for that, but Paul Giamatti didn't.

Ditto on The Departed, The English Patient, and Will Ferrell in general
I'm gonna be brave and say The Princess Bride. I've NEVER been able to finish it.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 6:06pmThe Departed. Most definitely. Hollywood sure pulled out all the stops to give Scorsesi an Oscar regardless the film this year. The Best Picture award just seemed as if they tossed out an extra bone as an apology.

I agree about Lost In Translation, 300, Napoleon Dynamite, Sideways, Million Dollary and The Departed (Even though I liked Scorsese's film quite a lot).
But who the hell mentioned Chicago, Brokeback Mountain, Dreamgirls, and Cabaret???!!!
I want names.....!

Among the most over-rated films of recent years would have to be:
300 -- over-rated simply by virtue of not having been laughed off the screen by audiences. This is the SHOWGIRLS of the new millennium, but people treated it as if it was something Profound and Serious, when it is basically just Racist and Militaristic Propaganda. Dr. Goebbels would have loved it.
MILLION DOLLAR BABY -- anything Eastwood can rasp, Freeman can rasp raspier. Why does Hilary Swank have to suffer the tortures of the damned ao that Clint can eat lemon meringue pie happily ever after?
UNFORGIVEN -- useless.
AMERICAN BEAUTY -- Indpendent Cinema Lite, a tired knockoff of about a dozen better movies.
MULHOLLAND DRIVE -- David Lynch's exploration of his psyche starts to lead him up his own ass. A boring parade of narrative tricks and gimmicks, with the occasional flash of the old Lynch magic that serves to underline how atrocious everything around it really is.
CHICAGO -- I have said it before, and I will say it again, and I will continue saying it: an unspeakable cinematic abortion in every single way, although the lighting and costumes are of a highly professional level. Really excellent red gels. Basically, this is the cinematic equivalent of CORAM BOY. The tide does seem to be changing on this, as I seem to remember that Premiere Magazine did a Most Over-Rated List that included it.
And now, the alleged "classics." Here are the two most bizarrely over-rated, for me at least:
THE LADY EVE -- unwatchable drivel, with an unbelievable plot and the worst performance ever given by Henry Fonda
JULES AND JIM -- the longest 90 odd minutes in movies

Sigh....
I've said this before and I'll say it again---DO NOT have a discussion of this nature with anyone you care about. There is no surer way to alienate a friend than to disparage a movie they hold dear--it always leads to boring personal attacks along the nature of "how could you not respond to that crystalline work of cinematic art" and "how could you fall for that pretentious crap."
That said, my candidates for "pretentious crap" include:
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
MYSTIC RIVER (and the entire ouevre of Clint Eastwood, the most overrated actor AND director of all time.)
All the SPIDERMAN and LORD OF THE RINGS movies (one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life came during a showing of RETURN OF THE KING, around ending twenty-seven or so, when Frodo was writing his account of the story we'd just seen into a large book, Sam said, "It's over then", and Frodo replied, "There's room for a little more." The entire audience groaned IN UNISON.)
The latest KING KONG remake (let it alone already!)
Basically all big effects-driven movies that are trying to impress you with all the moeny they spent, rather than entertain you. Ditto all movies making Big Important Statements.

I think that's what you did to me when I said I didn't like Brokeback Mountain.
Anyway, I'm the dissenting opinion on Moulin Rouge-I couldn't sit through more than 20 minutes of it, all because of Ewan McGregor's singing!

I definitely agree on the King Kong remake, thanks for mentioning it so I could remember that I'd seen it... It was so lightweight I literally couldn't remember much of anything about it.
Relatedly, School of Rock and nearly anything else that stars Jack Black. Don't get me wrong, I was entertained watching School of Rock, but I didn't think it was anywhere NEAR as good as I'd expect it to be given the reviews.
