Just thought I should take a moment to tell everyone who has the option to go see Pan's Labyrinth. Amazing story, perfect script, intesity with purpose. It is a really superb film.
And, for what it's worth, this film buff thinks this is the best film of the year.

I really want to see this, and now that desire has been redoubled! Thanks, tmitm!
Oh, this is great! None of my friends even know what it is. I've been dying to see it but an opening date hasn't been announced in my area. The suspense is killing me.
Saw it several weeks ago, and I totally agree. It's a brilliant movie, and it works on every level. Sergi Lopez's Captain Vidal is one of the best screen villains of the past decade. Maribel Verdu is also wonderful.
The scene with the Pale Man had me on the edge of my seat.

It works on so many levels...as a thriller, a horror film, a fantasy, a political epic, a war film, a children's story. It is just ridiculous.

I saw it ealier this evening and found it to be simply magical and genuinely scary and thoroughly engrossing -- easily one of the best films of the year.
The most visually stunning film I've seen in recent memory.
Can someone give me a non-spoilered basic plot of the movie?

From IMDB:
"...the story of a young girl that travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother's new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944. After Franco´s victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own."
It's not playing in Boston!
I really want to see this though, the NYtimes had a great review of it, but it looks like I'll have to wait for the DVD unless it goes into wider release.
The little girl is supposed to be excellent.
I saw Dreamgirls today in LA at the Cineramadome, and they had a HUGE display for this movie in the lobby. It was a giant tree (ala' the movie poster) with televisions showing scenes from the movie and flashing stills on the inside of the trunk. It was quite a set up.
hannahshule - I'm hoping that once the christmas break is over, the theaters in the Boston area will show it. I noticed that most of the indie theaters near me switched over to more mainstream movies right before break.
wow, if it's not showing in Boston, what are the chances it will open in the Tampa Bay Area...
i'm willing to make a pilgrimage to see this flick. no doubt.
I flippin' LOVED it...I also couldn't believe how full the theater was! I saw the 5:25 show at the ArcLight yesterday (Friday) and not only was that show sold out, but the 2:35 and the show after mine were also sold out when I left.
Everyone should see it!

Brilliant film. Threw me off at first as I didn't expect it to be so dark. I saw it at the NYFF closing and I had read virtually nothing about it at that time, so I was a tad bit surprised.
Certainly one of the most creative films I've seen in some time.
BTW, if you guys liked this film and haven't seen The Devil's Backbone, I strongly suggest that you do so. It's another excellent, multi-layered film by Del Toro, and it shares similar themes with ...Labyrinth.
I must agree that this is one of the best films of the year. Brilliant storytelling, which sometimes seems so rare in film these days. Great acting across the board. The ending was at once frightening, joyous and heartbreaking. If you crossed Alice in Wonderland, The Tin Drum and throw in a piece of Secret Garden you might come up with something like Pan's Labyrinth. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Not for the squeamish and definitely not for the young.
I'm also looking forward to seeing this.
On the top of my list!
I agree this is a very strong movie. Tough to watch at times -- the violence is that real and heartless, but there's magic and beauty underneath.
The visuals reminded me very much of Clive Barker's work.
saw it today. interesting and very well done. but too dark to be a favorite film. and i got really tired of seing people get shot and stabbed. definitely NOT a film for children in any way, in case anyone has the impression it is.
hannahshule, it's playing at the AMC Boston Common theater.

I finally was able to go see this film today, and I can't even begin to express how much I loved it.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED IT!
Just needed to declare my Pan's Labyrinth love publicly. Thank you.

I saw PAN'S LABYRINTH, and found the storyline with the girl to be completely boring and useless, but was absolutely fascinated by the Capitan and the housekeeper.
