I would strongly reject your characterization of the constitution. It's not just a piece of paper that can only be applied to the time it was written as if the founding fathers were laying out a black & white mentality to live by. It's a living and breathing piece of our country's foundation that must evolve, grow, and adapt to the times. You have to put the document in the context of today's world and interpret as necessary. Without context and interpretation applicable to the parameters of present day, it's a piece of paper that does nothing to practically serve or guide our country in 2013 - except for reminding us what our very basic rights and principles are.

The constitution provides basic guidelines and fundamental beliefs for the citizens of America. But it also must be open to interpretation and viewed within the context of present day to be relevant to the issues we face. You would do well to read this from the NY Times:

"Issues at the intersection of law and culture pose the greatest challenge to our Constitution. Today’s views of segregation, reproductive rights and same-sex marriage would have been unthinkable to the founders, and their views would be unworkable for us today. Judges have the hard job of determining when the culture has changed enough that the law must change.

The best assurance of constitutional health is the consistent application of the law and all its judicial precedents. The adjudication of same-sex marriage in California has been a model of such judicial rigor, addressing the activist politics on both sides within a consistent legal framework. Other courts may apply equal rigor and reach a different result. These are the growing pains of a rapidly changing culture.

These are also the difficulties of working with a very old founding document. Only by respecting its evolution through generations of careful interpretation can we hope to maintain our Constitution in its third century."

Employers are dumping employees or cutting their hours to avoid it.

After it is fully implemented about 30 million people. will still not have coverage. Hardly universal

The unions who fought for it are now against it

People are losing their coverage or seeing their premiums go thru the roof

Some people are seeing their spouses and/or their kids kicked off their private health plans

Doctors hate it

The GOP should let it go thru as it will allow a republican takeover of the senate once it is fully operational

joe, Perhaps I'll be able to make a better case after the MD exchange opens for individuals on Tue. It seems that the open season for SHOP enrollment has been delayed for at least a month. It's still too early to tell exactly how competitive the exchanges will be for small business owners who historically haven't able to get competitive insurance premiums like major corps and large public entities in the open market. One issue that I don't think we've discussed as a group here is the omission of tort reform from ACA but that's a subject for another thread.

Brian is right. The panic is setting in and the lies and misinformed opinions are flying.

You really just have to look at Massachusetts to see that none of these negative scenarios ended up happening despite the same rumors, lies and panic that came up before they started their healthcare plan.

Oh and I think single payer would be great, actually. If it did nothing else, it would save the consumer the profit skimmed off by insurance companies. But again it's hard to get people to accept that when you have the right insisting that Europeans pay more or the care isn't as good or there are death panels or whatever the lie of the day is.

Yeah single payer would be great; everyone's healthcare under the federal government's control. They can't deliver letters to people's houses without losing billions of dollars a year, so let's put them in charge of the single most important aspect of our lives, our health.

Mikey, what's a viable alternative to ACA or national single-payer as health care costs are currently gobbling up a huge chunk of the nation's GDP?
