And there are consequences to that opinion too.
People like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity will say that by expressing that opinion, you are creating a new tyranny of political correctness and making people afraid to voice their deeply held opinions. They will say that by exercising your own free speech, you are stifling THEIR free speech.
To which opinion you may very well say, "Suck it, Rush Limbaugh. Suck it, Sean Hannity. Suck it, Miss California."
But after a while, none of our opinions won't matter, because it will be the law of the land in 50 states, not 4.

A whole country of men who won't marry me!
Perez was on Larry King's Show tonight and did a GREAT job. I applaud Perez for the attention he is bringing to this.

I do my best to respect other people's opinions, even if I strongly disagree (like in this case)- my problem with her answer was that she sounded like an idiot. Opposite marriage?
He handled himself VERY well on Larry King. Just watched it... I was impressed!

ewww, admiring Perez Hilton makes me feel really dirty
I am still stunned on how many gay men will defend her and say it's her opinion and just expressing it. I was told by my friend from Boston at facebook~would I say the same thing to Obama since both him and Miss California have the same opinion and she was just less articulate about it? and we should stop villifying her!
I am still stunned that some gay men BELIEVE that marriage should only between a man and woman. I like this guy a lot~ I respect his opinion but lately he is getting on my freakin' nerve- its probably the way I felt about this issue- how passionate I am! I was considering of 'defriending' him on facebook since he always answers my post on facebook about gay marriage, that he doesnt believe in it! I know~its kinda immature for me to do that~ but what's the point of having friends that does not share the same value with you? I could be wrong-on acting immature on people who disagree with me. I am just very passionate about this topic! I am not going to mention any name-since he never post his opinion here, though express it on facebook. He probably doesnt want to be out about it here. I respect that! I was just upset about this whole thing. I think highly of him. I like him as a person- I just dont like his stand regarding gay marriage. It bugs the F out of me! Sorry. I am just being honest and frustrated at the same time!
Edit : I know what to do with him, since I am good w/ applications on facebook- I will put less of him, so he will see less of me (since it goes both ways) So he would stop answering my strong post in support of gay marriage on facebook. It's the only way to save our friendship.

It makes you more open-minded.
shhhh, pj. don't listen to him, j*. you need to cut this person off completely. this is not an issue on whcih you can compromise. you need to get them and their evil views out of your life!

I think it depends on the difference in values. I don't think it makes you any less of a person to not want to be friends with someone who doesn't share your values on gay marriage any more than I think it's wrong to not want to be friends with someone who is anti-Semitic or racist.
I refuse to believe that the two people who posted before me have never lost a friend over a difference in values.
Hmmm. The problem with being a hippy liberal is that I need to be defending Miss C's right to believe and say things like that. Gay marriage should be allowed all right, but when it is lawful and wide-ranging and available to anyone who wants it, that doesn't mean everyone needs to like it.
Hell, mushrooms are sold in supermarkets and restaurants as food, and I do NOT agree with that. I'm not calling for the bannination or illegalisation of mushrooms, I'm just not in agreement with the idea that they are food. (HELL YEAH I'M LIKENING GAY MARRIAGE TO FUNGI! Sorry y'all, I always get brain-dead straight after lunch, that genuinely is the best example I can come up with to illustrate my point. O_o)
So what was Miss C's implication? "It's going to happen, but I'm not a fan"? Or "I hope it never happens and I will sign petitions and go on marches to make sure it doesn't"? If it's the latter, she's definitely a B/C-word. But if it's the former, then we should probably leave the poor, close-minded soul be. I mean, you weren't planning on inviting her to your gay weddings, were you?

PJ might. He's always trying to get Goth at his wedding.
Well, of course she has the freedom to express her opinions and I absolutely respect her right to do so. I also have the right to think her opinions make her a C-word.
Exactly, TheActr! I'm pleased to see I managed to make my point effectively. :)

Thank you, Phyllis!
So Correct me if I am wrong? I am open to discussion.. that's what I DONT UNDERSTAND as why some people DO NOT SEE that the struggle for gay marriage or equal rights now as in 2004-2009 is the SAME as the struggle of African-American in the 60s or any minorities for that matter! I know it may not as harsh as what the African American had experienced and it was an awful awful dark part of our history and I dont intend to deminish their unspeakable suffering in any way... but I think (and this is my opinion) that the fight for gay marriage is the FIGHT of our generation..A lot of people DOES NOT see it that way!
Believing that marriage between a man and a woman is the same as believing that marriage should only between whites and whites and not white and blacks or white and asians. I see it that way. that's why I am frustrated to see my fellow gay men and fellow minorities who believe that it should only be between a man and a woman. I am sorry if I see it that way!
To be honest- I have relatives before that does not believe in gay marriage because of our catholic heritage.. but I educate them and reminded them that we moved here to the US and there is a separation of state and church and this land....all men are born equal,,and if dont like the idea- they can always go back to the Philippines! of course they wont! they come here for that freedom.. and that freedom is NOT EXCLUSIVE to heterosexual..its for everyone!
I talked to them and change their minds- if they do that or voted for PROP. 8- they are hurting people like me- their own relative! or cousin or brother!

I mean, I get the value of opening yourself up to differing opinions, but we only have a finite amount of time on earth and I think there comes a point where you just have to stop trying to change the hearts and minds of people who live their live in the name of hatred and bigotry fueled by the writings on ancient scribes who didn't know the world was round.
The only reason we're even asked to entertain the anti-gay is because their opinion is always rooted in religion.
"The only reason we're even asked to entertain the anti-gay is because their opinion is always rooted in religion."
And it kills me that they're always the first to judge!!
You can justify everything based on the bible even slavery and unequal treatment of women...and we would see it now as WRONG!
But people dont see it that way! It's a PICK AND CHOOSE bible thing.

Jay, I think the issue for me is not about whether or not we support gay marriage. It is simply that I support her right to voice her opinion, and yes indeed she was asked to do so.
She was asked if other states should follow Vermont's lead and legalize gay marriage, why or why not. If that's not asking for someone's opinion I don't know what is. If Perez did not want to hear her opinion he shouldn't have asked for it!! If he wanted to find out if she thought it should be a federal or a state issue he should have asked her just that.

Meanwhile, she claims she's had thousands of 'friend requests' on Facebook because she stood up for her beliefs, and Perez claims that he got more 'hate emails' than he ever had before.

No one's saying she shouldn't have given her opinion. It's just a dumb ass, bigoted, uninformed one.
It's a PICK AND CHOOSE bible thing
Of course it is, but we still let people get away with it. And it needs to stop.
i look forward to your not letting people get away with things plan.
Phyllis- I was refering to what Jay said earlier in the thread:
"Bottom line : The Question is NOT about her opinion... and her opinion denies people equal right (thank you whoever said that)"

All I need is the word of a sky genie and a tax exempt organization and I'm golden.
Q - how unfortunate, sad and very scary that is. Why am I not surprised by this turn of events?
