Planet Hollywood Leaves Times Square

Quite a stretch to link Planet Hollywood departing Times Square to an utterly unrelated attack on Bloomberg. If it were true, I'd shake the man's hand. Times Square doesn't need these McRestaurants.

^ Agreed. I went in there once, and it was overpriced and not that special.

Who took over the Virgin Megastore space in that same building?

Virgin Megastore is now Forever 21 and a Disney store (which opens in the fall).

Is it a regular Disney Store or a World of Disney Store? Going to the World of Disney Store on 5th Avenue for Christmas pictures was always a treat.

Forever 21 is another store the world needs a lot less of. They might as well be called, "Sluts-R-Us".

When I worked in the mall many moons ago, we politely referred to it as "Forever Skanky Ho" as the majority of shoppers were 40 year old milfs and strippers.

Bettyboy, I was originally going to refer to it as "Whores-R-Us" but I thought that was a little harsh! Guess I should have.

Well, pretty much any "juniors' type store is very provacative now a days. (Mandees, Joyce Leslie, H&M, etc depending on what is in your area). I have several articles of clothing from F21 and never once have I been referred to as a skank or whore (well not for those reasons at least). it's all about what you choose.

I didn't say that, but it is the lesser of two evils. Times Square is full of McRestaurants - might as well give the tourists a place to shop that they can't find at home.

I just bought a really cute mens shirt at Forever 21 in Times Square for 20 bucks.
The Virgin space btw has been divided between Forever 21, a Disney store and a Swarovski crystal boutigue.
Times Square is and always has been in one way or another a big mall - so the mcrestaurants thing doesn't hold water.
I think the fad for themed restaurants has simply passed. Hard Rock Cafe seems pretty antiquated now too.

"the mcrestaurants thing"?
What have I done to offend thee, Michael Bennett? Of course Times Square, the crossroads of the world has always been a mall of sorts. I guess I'd just prefer that the food court be a little smaller. If you've got to have a mall, at least have some variety to it.
Hell, I want HoJo's and Nathan's back - and sue me, I like Forever21 also.

Of all the themed restaurants, I liked Planet Hollywood! Over-priced (but who isn't) and OK good (good enough to keep on the possibilities list), plus a real treat to see movie props and costumes. What I hated was the constant announcement of birthdays and such. If they would have played films or movie trailers of popular movies from the past, instead of whatever crap they had on the TV screens last time I was there, would have made it more entertaining.
If they would have had movie trivia, would have been more entertaining. I was at a restaurant somewhere in GA where each guest has an electronic remote and while waiting for your food, you played trivia games which were displayed on TV monitors. Whoever won at your table would get a free dessert!

If it's a regular Disney Store then they can get that at home. What made the World of Disney Store on 5th Avenue special was that it carried park merchandise. And the gallery...I loved walking through the gallery and pretending I could afford the prints. And as I mentioned before...the pictures with the characters at Christmas was always fun.

What also made the 5th ave store special was having theme park characters rotate every month to get your picture taken with. I guess now they only do that for special occasions, such as DVD release promotions and Disney anniversaries and such.
If Disney were smart, they would get a property where they can build an attraction inside their shopping store -- a la Toys R Us' ferris wheel.

The Disney store on 5th Ave was AWESOME! Beyond the merch, the store itself was a blast to hang out in.
I miss Disney stores.
As far as Planet Hollywood goes, does anyone really care? I mean, are there people who are like "damn! my favorite ****ty food theme eatery is closing!"?

Before they closed I recall the Princesses/Fairies being there all year round and the Fab 5 would show up at Christmas.

Remember the crazy extravagant windows they had promoting the new releases, Eris?

What's going to happen to the piano keys from Big and the dress that Lust wore in Seven? Can people grab them from the dumpster the day after closing, like some people do with set pieces after Broadway shows?

I do remember the windows. They did such a fabulous job there and I was so sad to hear they were closing due to increased rent.
According to the article I just found it seems it's not just going to be your average Disney Store in your local mall (if they didn't close) which is good. It sounds like it could be a nice attraction.
