Making a joke, referring to a member's hospitalized mother, is not anywhere close to being funny. That is what I call sick.

Is somebody's mother about to be canonized? If so, I was unaware that I made a joke. On the other hand, she's dead and about to be made a saint, so what the ef does she care?

Dollypop and Sueleen dislike Yenta...Yenta recently posted a topic asking for prayers because her mother was in the hospital with West Nile.

That is exactly what they were "making fun" of.

I did not know that. (But BT11, I have seen this phenomenon before where somebody makes a remark and even people who are on this site a LOT -- like me and Abba, frinstance -- completely don't know it's a reference and then somebody comes along and REPORTS it just in case the people allegedly being made fun of missed it too. Basically, it guarantees they'll be hurt. What's up with THAT?)

Anyway, back to Yenta's mom, where did this happen? I didn't even know there was much WNVirus around at this point. (I'm kinda interested in epidemiology as a hobby.)

I remain unconvinced, BT11. I just read a post by Yenta in a Sueleen prayer thread (the one for the dog Lady Larkin vomiting in the toilet) and Yenta asked if she could say a prayer for Lady Larkin in synagogue. She then asked for the dog's Hebrew name. Looks like there's been some prayer-related banter between the two.

Wouldn't it be just horrible if this thing you felt the need to point out (and which might have made Yenta feel bad) was untrue?

Because, West Nile Virus does IN FACT come on with flu-like symptoms and often requires hospitalization. Like poor near-dead Brad Pitt.

i definatly believe in prayer, don't get me wrong, but i also have faith (for the most part) in modern medicine.
i do believe that prayers help things alot though, but one can't rely just on prayer... it helps the scary parts but the medical parts need to be taken care of like medical problems.

Derrick, I had forgotten that Yenta claims her mother has that disease. Maybe it was on my mind. But as Namo pointed out, the WNV does start out with flu like symptoms.
I don't know where you got the idea I don't like Yenta. As a matter of fact we have had some nice PMs.
Some people just want to stir up trouble. And you claim to be the mature one.
By the way, Yenta, how is your Mother doing?

I don't think Brad Pitt has West Nile Virus, but boy you guys had me concerned. So I did a search of cases in California and found a government site. Seems it really hasn't hit the state that badly. Only two reported cases of humans affected as of July 12. One a 47 year old man and other described as a youth. Neither were from a county close to the coast. Brad should be okay. Perhaps his problem was that he was on that Lindsay Lohan diet.
