SallyBrown - that is some admission from you. You must have HATED Emma if you didn't like it if only for Ewan. Actually, I thought the whole thing was far too Chocolate-Box....'S and S' had a much more realistic feel to it. It appears this is what they've done with 'P and P' and from the excerpts I've seen I'm not sure it works. I agree with Jimmcf in that the Firth/Ehle version will take some serious beating.

I don't really know how to feel about this film. I don't really see Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett. And I happen to love the A & E mini-series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It was such a close adaptation of the book that you really can't go wrong with it; Colin Firth was perfect as Mr. Darcy. I think that this version will probably lose something since it is a film that will be shown in theaters, not a mini-series on tv, so there will probably be a lot of stuff cut from the book. A lot of times film adaptations aren't as good as the book, but the A & E mini-series was an exception.

I LOVE "Sense And Sensibility". It's one of my favorites! And I really disslike Jeanna Malone in almost everything! So, maybe if you like her then it will be fine, if not then you will see what I mean. And as always Dame Judi Dench was fantastic! Her scenes with Keira is so great!

Yes! I went to a special screening last Sunday and Keira was there doing a Q & A but it seems like people don't like her here re: 'Pride and Prejudice' I really enjoy her and she was a delight to meet.

BTW, LOVE the Angie Avatar!

I had this weird vision of Rachel McAdams as Elizabeth.

I thought Keira did an amazing job, but I also love Rachel!

Garland Grrrl: I am adopted so I too want to adopt as she has. She is an amazing soul! LOVE that photo, it's one I have not seen yet!

pattifan- you have NO idea. I even bought the movie because I was so excited my mom let me buy another Ewan movie (she got mad and forbade me after I bought Velvet Goldmine..but she's better now) and I knew NOTHING about how just BAD the movie was going to be. Of course I loved Ewan in it..he was good..as he alwas is...but he had a really small part anyway.

And the movie was just..BAD

I'm kinda mixed on this film. It's looks beautifully made (I'm a sucker for period pieces). And Judi Dench is my favorite, also adore Donald Sutherland. Keira (meh, it really depends on my mood). Jennifer and Colin were just so perfect.

We'll see. *says the gal with a pic from the new P&P as her icon..)

I'm going to the Gala screening of it at the Toronto Film Festival next month, but am ambivalent about it. I'm not a big fan of Keira. I think she sneers when she smiles and I don't find her to be that interesting or good of an actress.
I'm also a diehard fan of the Firth/Ehle BBC version.

But I'm still giving this one a chance.

nothing can ever replace the original P&P that was on PBS. colin firth is just beautiful in it, especially when he rides his horse and wears a top hat. i am obssessed with this movie. i know that keira could never replace jennifer ehle...ever. jennifer plays lizzy to perfection and looks so period.
i hope the new one isn't too different from how it should be.

Keira Knightley as the great Lizzy? She seems cool and all that, but I really don't see her as being Lizzy. I'm definitely biased toward Jennifer Ehle, though; I really feel like she was the best. I'm not saying that Keira Knightley won't blow us all away and prove me wrong, but I really can't see that happening. I'd rather see someone like Natalie Portman do Lizzy if she could get the accent right.

Speaking of Jane Austen movies, has anyone seen Persuasion? I can't remember the names of the people in it, but Wentworth is played by one of the men in the POTO movie. (But don't hold that against him.) Persuasion is the best Jane Austen movie, aside from Sense & Sensibility, that I've seen. It's very quiet and slow, but everything comes together so perfectly, especially the ending. I cry every last time. Sigh.... It makes me so happy in the girliest of all possible ways.

Okay this may turn out to be a good film, BUT I love the one with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, and I am upset that they have remade it. I'm sure I will see the new one, but it will never replace the BBC one for me.

Okay, let's be clear here. This isn't a remake of any previous movie version; it's a readaptation of the book. If you don't think any adaptation can improve on what's already there, fine, but don't complain about a remake. That's like moaning that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was an inferior remake of Willy Wonka.

That is true, and I agree with you about that. I just don't like how they are turning this isn't a big celebrity thing. So I will say, I think I will like the BBC adaption of the book more than I will like this adaption of the book.

Wentworth in Persuasion was played by Ciaran Hinds. I love that adaptation, too.
He's also playing Caesar in the HBO series Rome.
