"Go and get the pictures of dead presidents from your parents drawers and send them to me"
Was he asking kids to send him money?

Posted: 10/23/09 at 9:21amYes. He was mad that they made him and his crew come in to do a live show on New Year's Day. He did it as a joke, but you know how literal kids are. It got him in tons of trouble and eventually led to the cancellation of the show.

From Classic TV:
"New Years Day 1965: he asked the kids to go get Dad's wallet and take all the "little green pieces of paper with pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lincoln, and Jefferson on them, send them to me, and I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico." The show received thousands of angry phone calls, and Soupy was suspended for a week."

Funny, my first reponse was "Awwwww." I see Snafu and Jane share my sentiments.
Not someone I've thought of in a long time, but I sure enjoyed him when I was a kid.

I don't know if they were on back-to-back, but when I think of Soupy Sales, I also think of Beachcomber Bill. Anyone else remember that show?

Posted: 10/23/09 at 11:14amSoupy's show was a staple in our home. My two younger brothers worshiped him. When his show came back in the late 70s and stayed in syndication for a few years, my own sons were rabid fans. Now, some of his shows are available on DVD, and my brother's two sons, ages 6 and 4 continue the fandom! They are obsessed with him. I suppose you could say he is timeless. R.I.P. Soupy.

Did anyone else do the 'Soupy Shuffle'? It made laugh everytime he did it.
I hadn't thought about him in years, and now I'm missing him.
Rest in Peace Soupy. Thanks for the memories, fun and joy.

Craig, I think it was "How come I see F, you see K?"
I loved Soupy when I was a kid but he had some harsh and negative criticism of Pee-Wee's Playhouse after it premiered that I could never quite forgive.

No, JohnBoy, I simply have critical faculties and therefore was able to assess Mr. Sales's comments about another kids show that had material adults would also find funny and using the grey matter in my head, I was able to come to the conclusion that his criticisms were not only unfounded, but seemed tainted with the special kind of jealousy that arises when a performer feels as if time has passed him by.
I'm not sure if you know this, but the "part of the creative team" criteria is something you made up. Sentient beings are allowed to think about things like cultural criticism and comment on it without having been Jambi the Genie. Your POV might work with a 7th grader, however.

I saw the show that day when he told the kids to go "tip toeing" into their parents' room, and that they'd never hear them because they were still sleeping from New Year's Eve. I think he said to look for your father's pants hanging on the door and reach into the pockets, etc.......
I couldn't believe what I was hearing!
