Posted: 9/9/13 at 10:34amI have one.... sitting in a box in storage. We used ROKU for a few months and I was very unhappy with it. We eventually decided to get a Smart TV (has wireless internet) and have never looked back.

I tried one for my bedroom. I'm an Apple TV users on my main TV.
I had it for about 3 days before I returned it. The quality was atrocious compared to the Apple TV and I found the interface to be clunky and non-intuitive.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 11:34amI also have a Roku that I don't use since we got a smart TV. I may use it now for the classic films that were linked here a few days ago.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 11:47amReceived as a gift. Hooked it up. Linked it to my Netflix account. Realized that there was little in my queue that I could actually watch through the Roku. Unplugged it. Changed my Netflix account back to the way it was before the Roku. Boxed the Roku and it is sitting somewhere in the house.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who absolutely LOVES my Roku. I use it all the time, especially since I'm also a Spotify Premium member, and Roku supports Spotify. I absolutely love it. I probably watch two or three movies a week on my Roku. One of my favorite purchases, hands down.
I have the Roku 2XD, which is now apparently on sale on their website. $20 off, and free shipping.

My friend Tom has it. The picture is just as good as the Apple TV. The content is great. But it is a little clunky in the handling. If you are a Apple person then it is probably easier to go with Apple since all the apps, airport and content streams effortlessly thru it. But if your a PC person it probably doesn't matter and they are both just as good. If you haven't you should checkout CNETS review.
By the way I wonder if APPLE is including a new Apple TV in its big announcements tomorrow.

I have the Roku 2 and love it. I watch Netflix and Hulu on it and it's nice to be able to see it on a TV, as opposed to my computer (I don't have a Playstation, Xbox, or any other means of watching these on a television). Other than loathing the formatting for Hulu, I've never had any problems and would definitely recommend it to others.
Brian07663NJ, what problems did you have with watching Netflix on the Roku? I've never had an issue with this. For me, anything that is listed as streaming on Netflix can be watched on my Roku. Are others having issues with this?

Posted: 9/9/13 at 2:39pmThe significant difference is that Roku has hundreds of channels. Apple TV is great if you live in the iOS ecosystem. But the Roku can stream movies from pretty much anything (except iTunes). You can connect a USB drive and/or use PLEX to stream anything that's stored on your computer/hard drives. There's more flexibility with Roku. But again - if you're all about iTunes - it's not the choice for you...

Posted: 9/9/13 at 2:51pmGot it. I guess I am one of those on the iOS ecosystem. But I am curious.. when you say Roku can stream from anything? ..besides the usb drive and PLEX ( I do that thru the tv)... what else is there to stream from? I use all the other normal sources like Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, youtube, BWWTv and such thru Apple TV. Is there stuff out there I am not aware of?

Roku allows access to:
- Amazon Instant Video (which, if you're a Prime member offers a bunch of free movies to stream instantly)
- Spotify (which is great if you're a premium subscriber)
- Pandora Radio (which is totally free to sign up for)
- VUDU (another rental service, which is fantastic)
- HBO GO (which has every HBO program ever aired available for free, as well as all of their movies that they are currently showing on all HBO channels. Of course, you have to be an HBO subscriber to access this...or at least mooch off of someone else's account.)
- Facebook
-and I know there's a program you can download that can access and play your entire iTunes library, wirelessly. I'm not home now though and can't remember the name of it.
Here's a full list of the channels: http://www.roku.com/channels#!browse/movies-and-tv/by-popular
There are also games that you can buy to play, and the newest Roku has a great feature, which is a headphone jack in the remote control.

there is a lot of stuff you are not aware of DAME
but the list is way too long for me to get into at the moment
...now back to roku...
can someone explain to me what PLEX is?
#15ROKU - who has one?
Posted: 9/9/13 at 3:03pmI'm not sure about PLEX, but I'll definitely look into it when I get home. Here's what the website says about it: http://www.roku.com/channels/#!details/13535/plex

Um.. I get all that on the Apple tv. I think I get Rhapsody instead of Spotifire. But everything else looks the same.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 3:14pmWell, I don't have AppleTV, so I don't know what it does or doesn't access to.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 3:15pmMormon - it wasn't that I was having trouble using the device. I just don't use many of the features to warrant having the device and a majority of the items in my Netflix queue were not available for streaming so it was useless to me. It was a gift and I wouldn't have purchased it for myself to begin with.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 3:37pmDAME, I'm going to guess that you have a jail-broken Apple TV (2nd generation) since a lot of the channels that Roku has (such as Amazon Prime, Vudu, Pandora) are not available, unless you are counting using Airplay from your computer/iphone/ipad.

I have the old-farty HD version...got it on Black Friday last year while waiting for the old tube TV to die, which it finally did this past spring. It was replaced by a smart TV.
The smart TV rules on apps like Netflix and Amazon but it's really limited by the relatively few apps currently offered by Vizio. So I still use my Roku, mostly for Vimeo, PBS, HBO Go, Warner Instant Archive and Redbox Instant. I'm fine with the quality of everything except Redbox, which is often pretty horrific. Blurry, pixelated...don't know if it's the prints they're supplied with, but something's got to give there...and soon.

Posted: 9/9/13 at 10:12pmLOVE, LOVE, LOVE my ROKU! Just bought a second one (ROKU 3) for the bedroom TV. I've had a ROKU HD on my living room TV for about 2 years. Use it primarily for, NETFLIX, AMAZON PRIME, VUDU (where I store my digital movie library), HBO GO, PBS, CRACKLE, SYFY, VEVO (Music Videos), VIMEO, HULU PLUS, and most recently, WB ARCHIVE INSTANT, which I'm loving!!! I also, from time-to-time, enjoy some of the more obscure (mostly free) streaming services that ROKU offers, although content and picture quality varies. The remote for the ROKU 3 comes with ear bud headphones and a jack. I can plug the headphones into the remote and watch late night TV without disturbing the hubby. And the sound quality is actually quite good. All-in-all, I highly recommend, although I've never owned an APPLE TV or GOOGLE TV, so I can't compare.
